Hi all, I'm wondering what kind of fish finder is currently best value for money in the ~$1000-$2000 ball park. Use will be in 10m-50m water around Canterbury, and 100m-300m+ off Kaikoura at least a few times a year. I'm thinking a Furuno FCV-628 which takes a P66, or maybe a 588 with a 1kw transducer.

Chartplotting is in the nice to have basket; I'm happy to use my phone or a tablet with Wetmaps or Navionics. What I really need is to find structure and fish.

I'm also thinking about putting a tilted element thru hull in rather than the transom models. At this stage of the build drilling holes is not a big deal.

P66 great transducer and real value for money but over 300 is a bit of an ask. Run with whatever head unit you're comfortable with IMO. Looks like you are used to Furuno. If budget buy something that can run the 1k even if you get the P66 to start with.

I'm brand agnostic. But it seems to me that the main benefits of Lowrance, Garmin etc in that range are all sorts of gizmos:shallow water structure scanning, chirp, side view, chartplotting...

From what I've been told Furuno is pretty much unbeatable in basic 2D sonar, and reliable as heck. But I could be wrong; electronics is a fast moving field.

I could just focus on the 100-200m water off Kaikoura; I don't know much about the options there. Need to jump on a couple more charters and pick the skipper's brain.

What about if I settle for finding fish in 250m? I assume side scan would be useful for scooting up and down the bays and harbours around Banks peninsula. Is there a unit that does it all well, or do I need to compromise on price or buy two units: one for deeper stuff and one for side scan/plotting etc?

I've seen an older Lowrance HDS (gen 1) with the HSTDFSBL (not chirp but massive value for money) give images of fish in 300m. I've heard rumor's of deeper. A newer unit would give side scan. I'm not sure about the Elite series doing the same as they are 600w.

A Furuno will give much deeper with a 1KW (preferably the TM260 not TM258, it goes wat deeper). Again not chirp, if that matters. This was a proven combo for many years

I've only had the one Lowrance unit and wasn't impressed. Of course it was 6 years ago and was a budget $150 job with the standard tranny. It would find bottom past 60m out Raglan, but I don't think I ever had it paint a fish for me that was actually there. Obviously not really valid if I'm going up budget and a newer model.

owt, for 250-300m you will need at least 1kw transducer. TM260 are great. You will see bottom at 500m if setup properly but more importantly, you will see fish at 300m
Sidescan/ downvu will only reach 80m if you buy the best transducer.
Garmin units are very easy to use, simrad are also very popular but as soon as you need 1kw of power, unfortunately the price starts at $4k
If you try and use a 600w tranny at these depths, you will be very disappointed, especially usind standard transducer, 600w in chirp would work better but price start at $4k for total unit/ chart/ transducer

Yes this is beginning to make a bit of sense to me now. It seems that I will need to compromise on something, either price or features.

I can have some of what I want at 1-2k but not all. That's always the way isn't it? If it weren't for fishing off Kaikoura a regular Garmin unit would do it all. The bottom there drops off to 1000m a kilometre from shore down Goose bay way, but I don't actually know what the fishing is like. I just picked 300m as a rough estimate of how deep I'm likely to get a line.

The charters I've been on stay in 100m more or less, catching perch and cod. I'll ask a few local skippers next time I'm up that way. I do know that a few trailer boat people basically used to fish blind. I do have the option of getting a basic shallow/medium depth unit and just accepting that marking fish in 300m will not happen.

You might look at a head unit that is 1 kw comparable and then transom mount a budget 600w transducer until you can afford a 1kw ‘ducer.
Garmin and Furuno both have served me well.

There have been numerous discussions on this site regarding the pros and cons of various  brands of sounders and transducers.  One post in particular that comes to mind was from AlanL if I recall correctly.  He posted up some sounder pics using a P66 transducer.  They were quite remarkable, he was picking up bottom in 600m+ or thereabouts as I recall.  I guess the point I'm making is that performance is based on selecting the right settings and really fine tuning the unit.
Sorry I can't find the old post, I've never had much joy in searching for old posts on this site.  It was probably about 12 months ago.

Thought about that but I can buy whatever I want now. I can wait for a little bit longer in the build before I drop any money but I want to sort out options now so I can jump on deals as I see them.

I could in theory drop 4K on a sounder but I don’t want to over spend on a 5.3m boat.

Fish addict: The search function on this site bites. I’ll try a custom google search. Good to know though. If I can get bottom at 500 that’s something.

I have a Garmin 7412 with a 600W GT51 transducer that punches well above its weight both in the shallows and deep water. I have found fish at 430m and have no problems at all at 300m.

Here are Puka, Bass, Bluenose & Gemfish all caught at 369m

Nice, but a little more than I am hoping to pay? Bay marine have a Striker plus with the GT52 for under 1k, but not as capable. It looks like their pure fishfinders are 500W only.

Well I’d look at a TM185m or the in Hull equivalent, great transducer to around 500m.

I'm wondering about that. Easier to spend up while I'm building the boat and keep it as is for ten years rather than go spending after I've called it finished.

I agree with Legacy.  Given your situation where you are building the boat I would give serious thought to installing an in hull transducer rather than a transom mounted transducer.  The correct placement of transom mounted transducers appears to be a bit of a 'black art'.  The key to getting a good reading at speed seems to be placing the transducer in a position where it is not affected by turbulence or aeration.  Some hull designs seem to be better than others.

I've been looking at thru hulls where I'd drill a hole. I don't think that they do side view with my deadrise. I prefer them to inhulls (where I need to remove the wooden core, fit a pure glass patch and place the transducer inside the solid glass.) Thru hulls also do temperature.

There are no strakes or protrusions underneath except the central skeg and side sprayrails. That will help either a thru or transom mount.

Biggest reason to go transom are side view and price.

Buy the best tech you can afford, with upgradeablility for transducers. You might be surprised how well you can position/tune a lower powered transducer.
If you own it for 10 years, it will pay itself back based on finding fish (thats finding, not catching, as thats up to you).
Side scan or the equivalent is great, even if impacted by an outboard leg etc. Note that you used to be able to mount 2, one on each side to fix this.
You can also go with US version of sliding leg to change its position depending on your speed (make sure it locks though as a transducer dragging on the road is not a great look - personal experince).
