Heading to the Three Kings on Monday, and while my mate has scraped together some pretty respectable gear for the trip I'm thinking about buying a set up as I don't want to get up there and be undergunned (and I've got a massive case of TAS going on)

From my research it sounds like pe8 and 4-500gram jigs are the way to go...

I don't want to spend much more than a grand, thinking about the folloing combo:

Jig Star Ninja Overhead Rod
  • PE 4-8
  • Jig range: 200-500g

matched with a Talica 12.

Will the Talica 12 have enough capacity with pe8 line? Or should I look at the Talica 16?

Id go for a better reel than that.......the rod is good.....you could still use for general when you come back.......
Personally i love OJ's 4000P/5000P if you can find one used but Jms(pe7/Pe8)/accurates, all spring to mind......I will leave others to comment on the reel......you going with Saul is it?
Once the idiots turn up..Im outta here...No time for Drama Queens.

Check out Offshore Elite Multi Jig 24-37kg, about $500 (Big Fish Pakuranga have these as well as Fish City).  this will fit a Talica 25 perfectly and you will fit 500m 128lb Suffix 0.5mm.  this is what I'm using next week at the Kings with Cova!

Also Ninja at Smart Marine at a killa price but you will have to file down the reel seat and real foot to get a perfect fit. (I've also got this on a Torsa 40 which has an identical reel foot to the Talica except its a bit filed down now)

If it's your main outfit, don't go with less than 300m PE8.  Thats minimum. Sometimes there may be drops of 200m & with current another 50m, doesn't leave much when a big one runs.... been there when my PE7 reel lost a few hundred meters & had to resort to Salty 6500 for the deeper drops.

Who are you going with?

Weather's looking ok, esp. Tuesday with 15 sec swell intervals.

too bad Paihia boms out of stock...

My other option is to use my older saragosa 18000f. Currently has about 200-250m of 100lb jerry brown hollow on it.

If i look to respool it with pe8 goosen would it have enough capacity?

I had no problems with the Talica 12 as for the kingys we were only dropping to 70m but if your wanting more capacity then go for a bigger reel. Smile

Good luck and hold on!!

Caught plenty of kings on a talica 12 and got a 30kg on a talica 8. Don't under estimate them!

Thanks for all the advice guys. Chris W had an awesome set up I would have snapped up but I left it a little late to get it up from Wellington.

In the end I went with the talica 12 one a daiwa saltiga pe8-10 300-500grm rod.

Also got he saragosa 18000f fully spooled and grabbed a second hand offshore 24-37kg 300-450gram rod.

Head up to Maungonui tomorrow, can't wait!

Mate I'll be real keen to know how you got on with the Talica 12 up there.

Just bought one, hopefully get a trip to the kings or banks to test it out in the next year.

What did you spool it with, and how much you get on? Cheers

Got 300 metres of pe8 on the Talica. Didn't actually do any jigging with it as we were fishing livies the whole time. Didn't catch anything massive (well not by 3 kings standards) but it handled kings up to about 27kgs well, better than my back did!
