Here's the real reason we as Rec fishers don't get a look in at policy for fishing:

 

Primary industries reporter Jamie Ball tackles the $381 million of levies paid by the seafood industry over the last 10 years – and how major player Sealord and other commercial fishing companies intend to pressure the government to cut costs and give the industry more of a say on spending.

If that's what they have paid in so far and they think they are not getting a say then we are all dammed that's for sure.

Money talks - until we pay a fee to fish we will get nowhere.

People who say it cannot be done should not interrupt those who are doing it!

At some point this will all end up in court.  The industry believe that their "Quota" is guaranteed, and as such it has an actual commercial value.  In the past I believe that quota ownership has even been used as collateral for business loans.  As stocks get lower they will push harder for recreational allowance to be cut to zero and all take to go to commercial, because they "own" it.  Please note I don't agree with this, I'm just saying how THEY see it.

When the day comes we'll all have to dig deep to fund Legasea, who will inevitably be the only people standing up for us.  We know how much the industry will be willing to throw at fancy lawyers and donations to politicians to get their own way.

I don't agree with recreational fishers paying to fish, apart from all the other arguments it would just be almost impossible to police.

So you're saying Moggs, that if we assume there are 1 million of us rec. fishers, then we each need to pay close to $400 just to get a look in? Every man, woman and child of us?

It really is quite depressing ain't it and it's not about to improve with the latest Trade Talks being negotiated.

Dosent matter how much the industry pay to MPI or govt campaigns,because at the end of the day fish are getting less,and are finite. So regardless of what they pay they will not have an industry if they do not address current practice and overfishing. No amount of money will bring the fish back. Maybe the industry & MPI should think on that.

Secondly ,and have mentioned this before. Seems MPI are paid to give concession to industry after reading the original post.

We call the regs law. They are not law but regulations. Made by unelected officials in MPI ,O.K d by the minister. They have not been debated, meaningful discussion has been excluded, and have not been through the house and voted on. O.K, govt has vested  in govt depts the right to do this it would seem.
Wonder how the new regs would stand in the high court.

As i understand we have no legal right to catch anything. We need to have this written in law.

Finally the govt needs to think about how much recreational fishing  puts into the economy . At a Guess far more than the total earn for snapper 1. Something they need to think on.

The key with this one is where the money comes from. Yes there is a huge amount spent in snapper 1 by rec's but this is already money that is in NZ (or the banks money).
Some how NZ needs to earn money from the rest of the world so that we can afford to buy(import) things like petrol, banana's etc. Selling fish is one way to achieve this. Another is mining our sea beds. I think there is a reasonable argument to be had with charter fishing tourism filling part of the commercial fishing income hole, but other wise we will need to find something else to sell if we are going to stop selling our fish.
 
I think this is the one place where Mr .Com's Internet Party has a decent idea. 
Friends of mine have recently returned from the UK. But rather than leaving there Jobs over there they instead have begun to work remotely via the Internet. Effectively bringing $100K+ to the NZ economy annually. 
If enough Kiwis got into this situation where we could sell our smarts to people around the world then we wouldn't need to sell our Fish or Minerals....

$38million a year, that is as much as they make just from Snapper in Sna1,

so what are the Quota holder truly asking for?

subsidies for what? their activities as a whole or what?

why now? are they not happy with how much we are still allowed to take? was it truly 3 fish there real wish?

they scare the hell out of me when i look at that amount of money being poured into MPI coffers...

Some serious questions that need serious answers.

1/ $381 million paid by private fishing companies to the government (mpi) Is this donation or quota payment. Levies could mean anything.

2/ Why is this done, where does it go. MPI makes the rules for commercial. Not as if it is donated to education ,health or business development. Have yet to see any money being put into accessing undersize dumping or finding a solution. So where does it go.

3/ If donated or levy would be good to see a breakdown on this & what form would levies take.

4/ under how many successive governments has this been happening.

Would be interesting to see a breakdown of what our fishery is actually worth to NZ. Has to be more than 38mill for a year for SNA1.
    A Good Skipper Keeps the water on the outside of the boat.
