What is the deal on catching grass carp?
One of the mansions i do Gardening on has a pond on it,prolly about 50 metres long and almost as wide, then joined by a small creek to another smaller pond.
Ive known for well over a year they have koi and also big goldies ,but about a month ago i saw a monster grass carp.Prolly around a metre ? and since then ive seen 2 smaller ones now that i am looking for them. There was a guy there a few days ago with a van who had a bunch of smaller ones in a tank who apparantly stocks up ponds now n then.  I didnt realise they got so big.

the owners given me permisson  to fish for one ,what would be a good bait ?
If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito in your tent.

That's a good find!  They are great fighting fish.  Are they at the surface of the pond? On a warmer day, when they are topping, have a crack with some floating bread crust or biscuit on a simple float set up or even a strayline if you can get to them.  Otherwise they will take anything vegetarian so corn or paste would go well.

Let us know how you get on.  Ps they can be quite flighty.  Good luck Thumbs Up

Bread on the top is a very good way of catching them. get them feeding on your free offerings and then introduce a o piece of bread with a hook in it, hook the bread thro the crust, that way it will cast better and stay on longer. You will need strong tackle and line around 10lb especially if there any snags or lily pads around.
Just free line the bread or use a bubble float if you need to cast a bit further.

ive caught heaps on floating bread. just use it on my 6 wt flyrod and 6 pound leader. the do big strong runs but i dont get to many bust offs on 6lb but you cant stop them on that. usually takes about 15 to 20min to land a big one which around my area almost double the size of the one above

That's one of my next targets, to catch one on my fly rod. I got a Greys Carnivore XF2 9' 8#, that should handle the tiddlers that I fish for.Wink I will be using some 10lb knotless tapered leaders for extra security.

where i fish there are pretty much no snags.if there was any snags i wouldnt use 6 pound leader. try a 6 weight rod if you have one its a heap of fun. they have totally differant fight to any trout ive caught

There are Grass Carp in the Waikato, Wefaknis caught a 12kg jobbie a week or two ago near the river mouth. I've never seen one there though, only koi.

when you find em you gotta be real steathy. even more so than with trout. keep low etc use cover to hide yourself. set a burley trail  of floating bread then put a hook in 1 or use a imitation floating bread fly and cast that in the burley trail and wait. you know when the fish arrive. there will be big spashy rises and swirls. now all you gotta do is wait til your bait or fly disapears. wait 2 to 3 seconds til the fish has turned down just like with a dry fly then strike and hang on. if your using light line dont put to much pressure on or they will bust you off.

and the easiest way to cast a floating bread bait on a flyrod is drop your flyline on the ground on your backcast with no bait and a size 10 or 12 flyhook on a rod length leader. then squish the corner of the bread bait to make it doughy but not to much or it will sink and ive only ever had 1 eat a bait that had sunk.then hook a size 10 or 12 flyhook through the doughy part of the bread and put it back on the ground. sneak back down to your rod and do a nice smooth foward cast and lay your line on the water . if you've down it right your bread bait will be floating nicely in the burley trail and not flown off the hook. and beware of ducks

I've heard the rumour that there are grass carp in the Waikato but have never seen or caught one myself yet.

1achuck, he would have launched at Hoods Landing and headed out over the coast. PM wefaknis for a more specific location.
