For me, theres only one place to fish from the land, the mighty Kaipara.

 

Good spot for a weekend would be Tapora. Bout 1 1/2 hours north of Kumeu (my location) following SH16. You can only fish the low tide there but its a great spot. You walk over the flats at low and come straight to the channel, casting into deep water. Get soem big fish there too, biggest ive heard of from a reliable source is 34lb snapper and a 36kg kingi.

I went up the other week with a mate but landed only 1 pannie snap but the place looks real fishy. Best tides supposedly 2 hours before low til an hour after.

Theres a joker who has a small camp up there, his names Paul and hes a genuine friendly type (helped pull my van out of the sand on an incoming tide). I'd recommend goin up 4 a day trip 1st and having a yarn to Paul and sorting out something if you wanted to camp there.

Its a bit of a mission to find exactly where his camp is but once you get to the place just ask a local where Pauls camp is and im sure they'll show ya.

To get there: take state highway 16 thru riverhead and follow for approx 1 hour til you get to the turnoff that says Tapora (on the way to wellsford bout 10km before). Go down there and past the school and on your left 5 mins along is a DOC sign at gate. Go in there and drive along, hang a right and park up once you get to the beach. Should be able to find ur way from there.

Not promising anything of course but...........

At this time of year you could do worse if you were to find yourself a nice little spot anywhere along the bays ( Shore ) Late afternoon/dusk.  Castor Bay to Cambells Bay is holding fish now for sure. Take a Six pack, Relax, you just never know what might happen.

At worst a tussle with a nice Ray will get the pulse raceing

Tried Beaumont St Sunday morning, used Pilchard and had plenty of nibbles, and one good strike but it spat the hook. Nothing landed and nobody else hooked anything. More of a place to pass the time and practice casting. Good spot if you want to try dropping you line in pin-point spots - just aim for the trail of boats leaving Westhaven.

Nice little spot if it's not busy, but my morning was ruined when three tour buses bowled up one after another. First one was Ok, friendly tour guide came by and asked if anything was happening before leaving me in peace. The second one was ok, an older American chap wanted to talk fishing - he was a keen surfcaster and I could tell he just wanted to throw a line in as well.

Third tour bus bowls up and out comes a swarm of Japanese tourists. Made the mistake of leaving my rod for a second to prep some more bait and turn to find some lady had picked it up for a photo op. They then took turns standing by me to have their photo taken. I had enough, packed up and left - much to their disdain as a couple hadn't had their photo taken yet.

There are times when a man just wants to be left with his rod and his fish!

Yeah, I suppose so, but there really isn't that much for tourists to see there...

And if te breeze turns the wrong way you get the lovely scent of diesel hard and strong.

Anyways, it was worth a shot, certainly seemed more likely than down under the bridge, but still more of a pass-time than a genuine fishing outing!

No, Beaumont St is the one you turn down to get to Westhaven, first on the left if you come off the Northern City-bound at Fanshaw, or last on the right heading towards the Motorway.

on beaumont street you have to be a good caster. wear the big wheel is,, is the best place to fish because you can get out in the current. the locasl use really flexible tip rods and get out wear the fish seem to be. i watched three pollies catching there limited of snapper in under 3 hours last fri sat and sunday.

OK, now I know that is St Mary's Bay!
