Hi all - newbie question here.

Just bought an entry level popper spin reel for casting poppers off the bricks. I was going to use a wind-on leader but have just read Yeehaa's thread on their new shock leader and gathered that nobody uses wind-ons.

Advise please...
Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish caught will we realise we can't eat money.

Have used twisted leaders but prefer to just use a tony pena knot (as per http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNAzz_sG-Jo ) for my shore based poppering.

its piss easy to tie and has never let me down. Casts nicely too.

From a previous thread - http://www.fishing.net.nz/asp_forums/windons_topic75527_post1077987.html?KW=wind+on#1077987

Don't bother with a wind on leader, learn the FG knot and you'll be sorted.

Check this link to see how our Topwater Guru Ben P ties a FG knot, - http://www.nomadsportfishing.co.nz/files/Top-Water-Techniques-NomadNZ.pdf

Yeah mate, early on I found that the wind on leaders got stuck in the guides when casting....very dangerous especially when you start casting expensive lures... The FG knot is awesome....that's the one you want, and casts real well!

short PR is good too mate....i cast on and off all day yesterday and PR knot still looking good.Make sure your guides are a generous size....12 to 16 mm top three....the knot is more likely to choke in those guides regardless of what knot you use.Wink
Wind ons are great for jigging and game fishing.
