Jimmy nail, Boulder and I headed out for a day on the Briney with Carl and Tony at Epic yesterday and after some lumpy weather a day or two prior, a mighty fine day it was too.

The plan was to smash a few kings early then tow a few teasers around and then see if we could switch one on 10kg or on a stickbait.  Part A went absolutely to plan with Jimmy and Boulder landing a couple of fish in quick succession that were called in the +20kg bracket and a few smaller fish too but all good scrappers and serious tussles. Jimmy had a Canyon reel or two to try out and they certainly looked and did the business. Heaps of drag and solid kit.

So then it was out with a teaser or two and off we trolled. And towed.  And trolled some more.  We heard Bruce Ellwood’s daughter hooked and boated a nice stripey at the Hook on their 6.1 centre console Extreme (sounded like it went 131kg – nice work for a junior angler) and John Neighbours on infinity tagged and released one just south of the hook.  And we continued to tow our teasers around for quite some time.  We did get one random shot but it didn’t stay so will forever be an identified beast that didn’t like the look of a very sharp looking crew on Epic maybe….

Back to the spot for a few more kings and the bite was still pretty hot with mostly large aggressive string pullers scoffing livies like kids with jelly beans.  More bent arms and it was all on. We landed a very healthy king that had been previously tagged which was a first for me.

On our way in, a couple of hook-ups and one to Sea-Cruiser  with John from Yeeha on it about half a dozen stones’ throw from us.  Isn’t that always the way?
Anyhow, it was a day of great company, an awesome crew and another bloody top day out Carl and Tony. Thanks heaps and looking forward to catching up again soon.

And a few pix to really tell the story....

Cheers Grunta.....not sure i will be in a rush to leave the hooks out of the marlin lures, that being said we missed another shot today, Jimmy was back for round two today, same plan - this time with hooks in the marlin lures.....

shots from Day Two, Jimmy with a 23kegger on Canyon, kings went off and we made the most of it til the boys were rooted

His mate Gracey with a similar sized model

Jimmy NAIL

Gracey with another

double on canyons

After devouring all the baits, we trolled inside the pins and had a marlin shot similar spot to JP yesterday, Jimmy spotting a stripey coming in from the side which bit Tony's Azure Mirage again, peeling a bit of line before another dropsie ......even with hooks in....yesterdays shot in short on the Azure Gaza Skippy .

Great pix there Carl.

CG - that is a sensational fishery down there and Carl/Tobes/Tony really are doing a brilliant job of treating people to an unforgettable day of getting your arms stretched! Great to see a tagged one recaptured in such fine condition too so will be good to get the info on it's original capture.

we got three tag results back in the last week, most had put on about 5 kegs in 2/3 years. with your one there might have been a mix up between cards in a flurry when tobes measured originally as it went backwards, good result seeing it come back in good nick tho

An Epic two days!!!!

Great crew, great banter, great fishing and great weather!!! And a great way to test out the new Canyon reels i'm importing.
The first day was with Grunta and Boulder catching kingies and trolling teasers for marlin and the second day was with a few mates doing the same but the kings went off.

A big thanks to Carl, Epic Adventures is the best charter i've done in NZ. and i've done alomst all of them. Its close to home, affordable, good boat, professional crew and big fish!! I highly recomend them!

All fish on baits they were a bit jig shy. The hs-18 performed well, they got a bashing and fished at max drag most of the time and did very well. The hs-30 would be even better it's got a bigger drag and lower ratio good for kings over 20kg.
