Hi guys, just watched this saturdays ITM fishing episode. Saw Matt Watson catching a Giant Flounder? Just wondering if they are found in new zealand ??? I have never been flondering, have seen the small one in shops but not the huge one... Was wondering if it was caught in some other part of the world or some camera trick..?

Alaska has some of the biggest flounder your ever going to find, they call them "Halibut" over there...
the biggest are quite huge, but there is less of them now, bit like 30lb snapper...
you will need a big dinner plate for one of these F@*kers...

here is another one, The 8ft 3in Atlantic halibut tipped the scales at just over 540lb...

Thanks for everything you did for us Eric. may you rest in peace, You were one of the real legends of NZ recreational fishing

The halibut segment was filmed when Watson was in Alaska a few months prior to the Kaipara 'con'
If you're not on the edge you're taking up too much room.

they were busy getting stuck in the mud while the halibut was swimming over stones. You can tell when Matt Watson's taking the piss cause he can't act for ****.

that halibut is just a tiddler compared to our Kaipara flounder..

I agree totally Tony, particularly the giant species that can sometimes be speared in the estuarine areas
after heavy rain when they chase the giant whitebait that are mistakenly thought by many to be mullet.

High time Kerry, yourself & I went after some giant flounder again as we have just about finished the one
from last year I chopped up to put in the freezer despite having a couple of meals off it each week.
