Hi all,
I have just got a new jig rod and reel, I have loaded some 50lb braid on and would like some advice on which leader material to use with my spin reel, should I be using 100lb mono or fluro and can anyone recommend a particular brand? I would also like advice on which jigs i should start out with my rod is a Jig Master 350 and i'm going to be fishing from Tauranga.
Thanks

If you are using spin gear. Don't se fluro. It keeps too much memory and starts to coil. I'd go 80-120lb depending on where u r heading

Yep using spin gear, so you would recommended to use mono then as it coils better on the spool. any particular brand or just black magic 80-100lb supple trace?
cheers

I use 80-120 lb black magic. Works well. Some people find 120 too heavy but there are some solid kingies around mayor. You will find if you load a fluro carbon leader. When it comes off the spool it wants to hold the shape o the spool.

Personally would avoid the supple leaders, they tend to cut themselves on the solid ring. Since fluorocarbon is out, buy yourself some Jig Star Knot Sleeve and use this to protect the leader knot at the solid ring. If making your own assist hooks, then buy the Jig Star Double Ring and Grommet then you can use your supple leader.
give it death!

Hi I got some 100lb mono and used a PR knot to join it to my 50lb braid. I brought some Jig Star swivels with the ring and grommets and tied it on with a uni knot. I then looked at the shiny new zest jigs I brought and wondered how to attach them, I was going to remove the assist hooks and loop them through the small ring attached to the swivel but thought they may end up being too short so I just attached the jig to the small ring with the split ring on the jig.
Unfortunately I didn't get to test the strength of the split ring as all I caught were barracuda and after losing a few more of my new shiny jigs to barracuda I called it quits. To preserve what jigs I had left for the next trip.......

Sounds like you are gettting there.  Most jiggers would not have a split ring anywhere in the connection between  hook and mainline, only using split rings for attaching the jigs.  Your assit should be looped through your solid ring, and a split ring for your jig only.  Means you dont have the weak link of split ring when fighting a fish and easier to change jigs, without changing the assist.  I recommend the FG knot over the PR.  It is both easier to tie and stronger in my experience.  As for jigs-they all catch fish and cheap ones are good when the cudda are about! A few different colours and weights is what you should focus on rather than the brand.  I jig with 200gm to 400gm jigs out of Tauranga at Schooner and Mayor, depending on depth, current, drift speed and how tired I am.  Go get em!

Your 50lb mainline is a bit light. What reel you using on the JM350
Ring and grommets are great

Fussballer... PR knot actually out tests the FG knotWink.  PR is better for jigging / FG for popping.
But both are only 70% ABS knot strenth
