I did a few searches but cant find any info on the coarse fish situation for Lake Wairarapa or if there are any other lakes in Wellington area with open public access. Just saw one dam that is only open to club events on sundays.

Be interested to know if anyone knows.  Cheers.

If the viz is good, probably throw a hook in though.

On second thoughts I'll probably spear them anyway even if I catch them on a hook.

Ok I'll start. From my experience this is whats over the hill in the Wairarapa:

Kourarau dam - some trout, eels, perch
Henley lake - perch, eels, trout
Lake wairarapa - trout, mullet, (what else?)

Im looking for a few big fat carp to have a crack at.  I know they are in the Wainui river I saw at least two rising by the bridge last year but couldnt hook one for some reason(probably so fat they didnt want my bait).  Or is that the only spot in Wellington with they live in?

The Wainuiomata River is fly fishing only, if you we're fishing with bait there, you we're doing so illegally and will get caught and fined.

Whitby Lake(s) used to hold some very large Carp, not sure if it still does. Lake Wairarapa holds Perch and some large ones at that.

Cheers flyfisher, I was using both yellow and white weighted nymphs and light colored glow bugs weighted down on a  fast sinking leader to try mimic a piece of bread and increase my baits visibility on the muddy bottom.  I had forgotten about the existence of the Whitby dams, will look into it Thumbs Up
