After some info, can't see answer on google?
Caught a snapper with a tag in its side today, possibly been there a while with the weed growth on it.
Yellow Tag, with a alpha numeric code.
Can anyone advise who I contact re sending info too, would be keen to find out where it is from.

Niwa are the people....was about 6 years ago they deployed s bunch of small plastic streamer style tags on long line caught fish....they'll be keen to hear more about this fish...nice!


What to do if you find a tagged fish
Remove the tag, and call 09 375 2050 (this number is written on the tag).
You will be asked for the number on the tag, where and when you caught the fish (GPS coordinates would be ideal if you have them), whether you caught it over sand or reef, and what its length was.
You will then be sent a pre-paid, self-addressed envelope in which to return the tag to NIWA.

And they prefer if possible to get the fish as they are now doing other research.

Thanks for the info guys, from photos I have since seen on the net the tag was severlly shortend from what it should have looked like when relaeased, I would say by two thirds, it was protruding about 40mm, no phone number was on the tag also.
The fish has been eaten so they can't get this one back, however I will phone NIWA tomorrow.

Photo of snapp as found, as most of the weed you can see was on the tag. The flesh around tag had been affected by tag.
 
Once filleted the tag came out, note to self try not to cut in half when removing!

Im sure tagged fish you take all the info you can (where caught, size, weight) any information possible, then release.
 
Otherwise i dont see the point in why they tag because n o info will ever get back to them. Not saying you done anything wrong. If theres no regulation on tagged fish just eat it then, I dont know.

Well he has taken the length of the fish. I can't see how we can always take the weight of fish and then put the fish back unless we were expecting it. To this day I have never seen a tagged fish so am not prepared if I catch it except I have a gps and tape measure.

any info is better than nothing id say.

not a good sign if the tag area is affected, hopefully it does'nt happen to all tagged fish.

Keen to hear back the info on this #2 (where, when, size), good on you for following up and taking the time to record the information.
 
Interesting, I see the use of a plastic tag that goes into the flesh, unlike NZ gamefish tags which are metal.
From what I've seen there are reports that the plastic tags affect the fish less and are more likely not to be rejected and flushed out of the skin. Could this account for the low reported number of recaptured tagged Marlin, Kingi's in NZ, the tags have simply fallen out........

Possible thing's can happen to tags in fish.
1.The tag falls out after being rejected by the immune system of the fish, and get's pushed out.
2.The tagged fish tags are never handed in due to pirate fishing.
3.Growth on the tag builds up and pulls it out
4.Fish died not long after or later on
5.They don't care to send it back
6.Fish are getting smarter and know what a hook is..
That i think could be the reason so many tags are sent out and very few come back..

We run the NZ Gamefish Tagging Programme. Finished the draft annual report for the Ministry on Friday.
Click on FULL REPORT on the right,
 
Gamefish tags have the letter G ot N as a prefix to the tag number.
They should be returned to the address below and they send them on to us.
Ministry for Primary Industries

PO Box 19747

Avondale

Auckland
(most tags still have MInistry of Fisheries but either will work)
 
A lat and Long (approx) or location, length, species tag number, date are all important.
A name, address and shirt size as well.  I suspect the NIWA snapper project don't do reward shirts any more. 
 
If you were the angler who tagged a kingfish, tuna or shark that gets recaptured you get a copy of the recapture letter and a T-Shirt as well.  The boat skipper tagging the fish also gets a letter.
 
Nothing wrong with keeping at tagged fish to get all the info. It is also an option to write down all the info and release the fish. We had one tagged kingfish at White Island recaptured 3 times but generally recapturing the same fish twice is rare.
