Hi everyone,

Today I saw a video on youtube, about a Maori girl fishing Matis Shrimp.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9MegekUjtY

And I did some searching I found someone has actually got one in Wellington Habour in 2006.
http://www.fishing.net.nz/asp_forums/another-weird-wellington-harbour-beastie_topic47307.html

Does anyone know where I can fish them in Wellington? (or anyone want to sell me some?)

Thanks guys

Ben

Yup, they don't get that big here either, that was my old post. Judging by the Polycraft in the background, that's an Australian vid!  BUT there are tons on the eastern side of the Wellington Hharbour - best way to catch them is catch a Gurnard!... Every Gurnard has one in it basically, but only a fraction of the size of that one, overseas they grow very large.

It was inside a Gurnard mate, I doubt you can catch them like that anywhere in Wellington, we just don't have those expansive mudflats and superclear water!  I reckon you could set a tiny craypot like device at night and get some though? Most seem to be in 8-12m water when they have been caught in Gurnard. Apparently they are super aggressive but very tasty! They burrow during the day I believe. When I used to put my camera down under the berly pot we saw the odd one sifting round sometimes on the laptop screen so they do come out during the day.

Close Uncle, but no Cigar.... that is Jenno, ramonas older sister. Well spotted on the polycraft, that is my little boat up in the Solomons at Zipolo Habu Resort (www.zipolohabu.com.sb). Wish I had it here!
That bit of footage shows pretty well the whole process of catching those jumbo sized mantis shrimps.
Can't help with the little wellington critters though! :-)
