Crisis or opportunity..?

Well it looks as though this coming season the mighty 5.5 Ramco will again be braving the high seas.
Will keep on taking lotto tickets in the meantime ...

Think I will try to fit a couple of tuna tubes - with typical kiwi understatement & scottish frugality it doesn't look that hard ...
& if you know what you are doing I'm sure its not...

My "special" $$$$ are going to buy a depth sounder/chart plotter , so the tin will be empty for anything else...

So would love some feed back ...
what do I use? 150mm PVC pipe?,
500 -700- 1100 gall/hour pump ? - assume I will run 2 tubes?

What are the obvious traps for "young" players...

Look forward to your feedback

cheers

this brings back memories, am fitting 4 next week so looking forward to itLOL if you cant afford to buy any mate then make them, 200mm pipe a good size, dont run a bilge pump it will burn out, try and get a dedicated either wash down or live bait pump, they are not expensive if you buy right 1st time, you want a pump that supplies volume not pressure, you can easily put in a skin fitting to supply water, this will mean the pump really needs to be below the water line, if not it wont work.
have a look at trade me, for the money those stow away tubes and pumps at about $275 would be the way to go, what you want to think about is simple, how many times are you going to use them,  live baiting is nothing like towing gear and you may find that dead baits work better, just a thought.

I think i still have most of the bits, pipe, hose etc that you need to make them. I never got around to making them for my old boat and the new boat came with some. Where are you? If you handy your welcome to all the stuff i have.

Find someone coming back from the USA and you'll either save a heap or get a better quality pump for same price.

Has anyone used those stow away tubes? Looks like they could be prety handy on a smaller boat with limited room....

its a rule wash down/bait tank pump, cant remember 100% but think its 4800gph, works well skippies alive from dawn till dusk.
volume not presure is the key, now heres the thing, volume is great but its sht when there are bubbles in the stream this will kill your baits, the lower the pump to the keel the better off it will be if you have a skin fitting or run a pick up pipe over the stern.Wink

Karm - have been researching this one for quite a while and have decided to run a 1100 gph rule pump for our livie tank, which could just service a single tube as a bare minimum if we're not running the livie tank... point being, its quite hard to obtain smaller livies, especially off the west coast - and off tutes you go through good schools of skippies/albies closer in, but there are none on the beakie grounds...

Here's a couple set up, big volume pump def. needed

Pump down below

Inlet tap and pipes

It works well, and most of the time they're great rubbish bins.

I use my livie tank for Mackerel and KY a lot more than the Tuna tubes.

no thats a pump for two tubes. that pic looks similar but I run mine as a dry pump.

mackeral and kahawai in a tube work well but you have to reduce the water flow some what as they get blown out and believe it or not the bloody things die, go figure but kahawai last ok, think the biggest problem with smaller jacks etc is they turn around and water is forced back through the gills, what you want to do is get some 75mm down pipe and let it sit in the tube then slide in a jack, this works well, personally bock off the bottom of the 75 and put hole up the side you dont need force fed water for jacks just a continual supply of good water

Thats the one im running just like Tumeke and I had the problem as BA explained with the smaller Macs. 2 Small skippies seem to work well in each pot and have been kept alive for extended periods, not that they got chucked back in that ofetn last season with a dirty big hook in there gobs LOL

Thats the pump you want, its the same as tumekes 299, Its about as cheap as they get as well, not a bad price.
pretty sure the outlets take  38mm  id hose.
The pump is self primeing though so make sure you mount it under the waterline in or out of the boat. Other wise you will have to back flush the air out of the system every useage. I have one and there is no substitute for the flow Two big skippes no worries.

Livebaitlarry.com make sure you put ball valves on and also you can feed a bait tank with the overflow
