i have just brought a perception swing a while back and have been decking it out scotty rod holders,ff e.t.c..over the xmas break i took it up north to whangarei for a fish but found the salt ice i put in the rear plastic pod for the swing melted around one and half hours after i launched..so was wondering would i be better off buying a insulated rear well cover for the swing to keep ice colder longer  as i see most kayaks have them theses days?

Hi snapps me again LOL if you go back to the well and cover idea you will either have to bung up the rear scupper holes and water could flood in there or if you take them out your catch blood will leak out and also the melted saltice.
Others I think use icepacks or bottles with frozen water.

I used a $10.00 insulated carry bag from the Warehouse inside the pod back when I had my Swing. Another option is get a custom coolie bag made by Penguin Sea & Surf to fit inside the pod.

I use one of the Penguin coolie bags - brilliant and can recommend.
Line it with a heavy duty poly bag, and then chuck your salt ice in, keeps any potential bitey attractant juices out of the water too.

The insulated covers are not that effective IMHO as there is a lot of warmth radiated into the well from the hull.

I think if it was me and this may sound rough and look a bit off but I would get one of those 10mm thick roll up bed mats the ones with the sliver backing on one side and just glue it over the out side of the pod with ados. You would only need to do the top half ??
Just an idea anyway..

With literally hundreds of insulated covers about the question whether they keep the heat "in or out' of the rear well has yet to be answered via a proper test.    Until that is done I stick to my Esky.

Has anybody ever tried cutting down a chilli bin or reshaping one to suit their yak ? Hacksaw and some glue ? One of you bright buggers must have the ability.

Had reasonable results molesting a polystyrene lidded box with a blowtorch to shape to fit my P13 rear well.

Abandoned project as it looked nasty LOL  But was a good fit.

Can post a pic or two tomorrow if interested?

Come on HLD show us the pics LOL

I was thinking about using the rear well as a mold and glass it then a layer of foam then another layer of glass there would be quite abit of work invovled though. I think I read here a while back that Badfish had tryed it but I could be wrong..

I just use a chillie bin that I attach to the yak by means of a couple of small stainless turn buckles.
Throw in a few small frozen water bottles and the fish are nice and firm for filleting when I get home.
I can easily fit 10 good sized pannies in the - even fit a 20lbder in with a bit of foldingBig smile
The solution to any problem - work, money, love, whatever - is to go fishing - the worse the problem the longer the fishing trip should be.

That bin would come up mint as with a bit of glass on it HLD .
I would even go as far as asking where you acquired such a bin. Looks similar to the ones ya get dry ice in ?

Possibly not the same bin but the local supermarkets ie. woolworths etc sell their polystyrene seafood bins for $1 each if you ask at the fish counter.

This one came from the side of the road, but had a label on it along the lines of "salmon fillets", so I might follow Chip'n s idea and try and get a new, unbashed one.

If you're going to have a lash at it, go for a largish soft flame and shape the grooves with long strokes, but close up as it gives a better profile to the grooves - you'll see what I mean when you start.
