Noticed alot of squid in the Waitemata at the moment and made me think about whether a squid pattern would have any success on schnapper. US sites show that they have alot of success with squid patterns catching stripers up around Maine during the spring. Would appreciate any feedback on whether any forum members have tried a squid pattern and if so can you share the recipe ?

RF  I think fish mistake a lot of short chunky flies for squid. Underwater though small squid look like nothing much. A thick brown wool body with a fat possum fur tail would probably look similar. It doesn't stop me mucking about with other fancier designs. I'll post up a couple when I get the time. At the moment sorting stuff for a fish tomorrow..

This was the best pattern I could find from searches ...plenty of bulk in the body to push the water and love that big eye...http://www.flyfishinsalt.com/techniques/fly-tying-bench/the-sensational-squid-1000077732.html

Now that's a nice pattern RF - thanks for sharing! In latest Flylife Nik's article about trophy kings makes a good point about colour of the squid. He says that a white pattern is less likely to get bitten than a red or amber.

That pattern from flyfishsalt has incredible action in the water, look on youtube, have tied up some in the past. Lefty's book on saltwater flies has some good squid patterns. I'm still playing around with silicon squids.
