My waxed cotton keeps on snapping while wrapping around the materials....   Any idea why?


I have three theories,

Is it due to the cheap bobbin I use being to tight, it does not seem to sit smootherly around the cotton.

Maybe the cotton is weak?

Maybe my technquie is bad and I am applying to much pressure or pulling in the wrong direction....

Do you have the thread running straight from the spool through the tube?

Try these:

1) check the bobbin for small nicks or rough edges at both ends of the tube using a piece of pantyhose. These can cause the thread to fray and break

or

2) carefully and slowly bend out the arms a little. testing tension as you go

I think the bobbin arms were to tight, so I just pulled them apart for a while and it is much easier to pull the thread out.

If it continues, invest in a ceramic tube bobbin holder... expensive, but I think worth it.

Hey Clark!  How prone are ceramic bobbin holders to Breakage if Dropped?

they are pretty durable.
I have a full ceramic tube (stonefly) and 2 ceramic inserts (one with delrin spool feet and one with brass) as well as some standard stainless tube ones
drops onto lino or carpet don't seem to have made much difference not sure about dropping them on concrete but.

Have a couple of them & no probs, might be different if you were to be matching the hatch, streamside thoLOL (butConfused)

Jax, I had a look at my tying tools & reckon I have one ceramic bobbin holder more than I need.

Sorry Clark, bad timing for me.
I'm flying to Nelson tomorrow to visit my terminally ill sister & will be there for a few days.
Maybe if you botch the lessons a bit your pupil might require a follow up lesson the following week?LOL
Would be good to have a catch up though.

I find that 8/0 snaps on me every time I use it, I've checked the bobbin and the tension is fine, I've checked for rough snag type stuff but there's none - even put it through a ceramic bobbin and it still breaks; I think it must be me, too much pressure on the thread maybe?

Does this sound right guy's? Cause it's drivin me potty to say the least!
