As I have well and truly caught the Gamefishing bug and can't fund my TAS requirements at the mo' I was wondering if you can small boat game fish - mainly targetting Tuna without Outriggers.

I was thinking of running two longer lures off the gunnel rod holders and some short ones almost directly behind the motor.  Is it worth the effort or should I just continue to beg rides and leave my much loved at home (boat that is).

    Cheers

DA - welcome to the club. I know Obald had a set of telescoping ones for sale at what I thought was a reasonable price. May help to PM him. Otherwise I think you should be able to get tuna with rods set in holders IMHO.
Nobody has ever come up with a great idea after a second bottle of water.

heya DA, back in canada i have seen lures spread out for trolling for lake trout. they are similar to paravanes and have a clip attached. when you get a strike they release the line. they look like two parallel fins attached at an angle, um hard to describe, but effective and cheap as until you arrange a buyer for one of your kidneys to support TAS. i'll see if i can find a pic on the net.

I sometimes troll a couple of lures off the back of my boat without outriggers. I think you'd struggle to run more than three though. we got heaps of Albacore and skippies over January out from the Cavalis. Also got severely trashed on a 10Kg and 15 Kg setup a couple of times by some bigger stuff we never saw. My rod holders are angled outward and backwards though. I doubt you'd want to risk your gear without the right angles on the holders.

On my first boat (MM) we caught plenty of tuna ,from skippies to 'fin with no riggers. The forward rod holders were angled out about 30-40 degrees, the rear ones almost straight back,or about 10deg. Trolled 4 lures easily. The rear lines were on either release clips or the (easier/cheaper) rubber bands down to the boat handrails. Forward lures off the rod tip and set to where ya want them. Had to take a little care in turns and rougher water to stop the fwd lines interfering with the rear, but no real probs.Had a couple of Stripies in there a couple of times (with Tuna lures!) but ND. Anyway, go for it, Tuna don't care, and if you're pulling marlin lures, you've still got A good as chance as many, if the fish aare about. Just do big zigzags(or small ones if ya want)..can put your marlin lures in clear water.Or at least keep you awake.
Keep your hard earned in your wallet 'till you see what you may need. Cheers.

I think the forward holders are at 45 degrees to the line of the boat.  All holders are the stainless ones so strength should be right.

I had thought about two corners, a short in one window and a shotgun in the middle.  I suspect it may be time to get out and try rather than theorising - all I need is some good weather.

CJ - I have seen some "swimboards" like you describe on ebay but I'm not sure if they're any good.  I'm talking to Jonah about Kidneys so there may be hope yet!

Bender - the level of TAS required to start me off means that I need to prioritise carefully what gets bought first.  and I'm open to ideas.  I'll post the list and see what everyones priorities are!

Peter Pakula is often quoted as saying you don't necessarily need outriggers on a small boat - I think his small boat (Cockroach?) didn't have them and he merely had his two long lures run off the rocket launcher angled out at 45 degrees. That's small boats, but have you had a look at the outriggers on Rick Pollock's Pursuit?

One thing you can't really get without riggers, or at least a rocket launcher, is height and some (admittedly marlin lures) really need that to work properly. But as MM says, for tuna probably makes more difference to the boat driver than the fish.

DA, I'm afraid my previous set of outriggers disappeared a couple of days ago courtesy of TradeMe - would have loved to see them go to a forum member.

We caught 16 marlin from our last boat of which only one was hooked from an outrigger. Pull one lure from a flat line clip low down (accounted for five fish, boy do they hit them hard....) and the rest from the rod tip. If its rough just pull three (that's when the 'riggers help). The beauty is there are far less cockups with direct trolling. I have less confidence in the clear pockets than some. The boat had duoprops and you don't see much just below the surface when they are fired up. Didn't worry the marlin though...

Awesome,

I'm inspired to go forth and experiment.  It sounds like it worth waiting to get the right set of riggers and I can still fish without them.  I just need to invest in some rubber bands and I'm away and laughing.  An excursion was planned this weekend but the weather has buggered that.  I may just have to play in the boat and do some rigging and brownie point winning.

    Thanks for all the input
