On Tuesday morning I went for a quick shoredive of Hahei. When leaving the house I did think, should I check my bag to see I got everything? I ignored my thoughts and sure enough, I forgot my float ! I thought of asking some local resident if I could borrow a boogie board but being a Tuesday it was quiet everywhere. I did think to drive into Hahei and maybe go to the dive shop but that seemed to ridiculous. I ended up tying my water/soap bottles to the end of my rope and it did work.
Because I did not have
a very visible float I decided to hug the coastline and not cut
across to the little island. Around the point the current was flowing
nicely, dove down in the deep gutter and spotted a dozy Dory. This
one was too deep for me and the shaft fell away from him to live
another day. I then got buzzed by a school of decent sized kahawai's
but I did not want to shoot one in case a cunning kingie would be
following them. Around to the more sheltered bay around the corner
and at the end of my visibility saw a whopping thick snapper thumping
away! I am pleased that at least I am seeing them. Give it a few more
outings and I might one day get a pannie snapper. Played around in
the bay for a long time, snooping and trying all sorts of stuff. On
the way back I managed this dozy Dory. He did not want to turn for a
good side-on shot so I had to shoot him from behind. ( what a coward
I am) The spear entered at the left hand tail end
and came out at the
front right mouth end.
Pretty pleased with the accuracy of my homemade woodie. I do have to add some weight to the handle part as it is nose heavy at the moment.
