FYI

From tomorrow morning at 6:00 am the access to the ramp will be controlled by a toll gate.

Below is the notice e-mailed to members mid-day today.

The Barrier Arm will be operational from October 2018

The committee has carefully considered the installation of the barrier arm.  At present less than $50 of your membership fee remains with the club to cover the repairs, maintenance and over heads.  (The balance is GST and NZ Sport Fishing Council affiliation fees).

The barrier arm has been installed so the club can maintain the boat ramp, jetty and erosion protection area for all users.
  • Fully paid senior members of the Houhora Big Game and Sport Fishing Club who need to access the boat ramp or jetty have an option of entry through the barrier arm using a car windscreen tag label.
  • The “tag” will activate the barrier arm to open automatically when in proximity of the barrier arm scanner.
  • Tags have been designed for members who launch trailer boats or require the use of the jetty to load or unload other marine craft, launches, yachts.
Conditions for Tag Users:
  • Bond of $20 per card required is required to cover purchase price of tag to the club.
  • Only one tag per fully paid membership per boat.  All members will be required to register their boat details with the club prior to receiving a tag pass.
  • To pick up tag please contact the club, 09 4097 7755 or email: [email protected]
  • Tags are not available to social members or for junior memberships.
Membership renewal for 01 July 2018 to 30 June 2019 financial year and tag card collection will be available from the fishing club unless other arrangements have been made.

Casual users: Will need to insert $5 of coins to open the barrier arm, no change is given. (Gold coins only) There is no charge to exit the ramp and wharf area, the arm will open automatically when leaving these areas.

I was under the impression that this was against the resource consent as the buildings are on leased council land?

They were planning to do the same thing and the Council stepped in some years ago.

Kezza123 - from what I gather you are correct regarding the original Consent, the Consent was either renewed (or renegotiated) with the Regional Council and that clause was removed without any public notification.

That’s a bit disappointing, I understand the need to recoup costs but this adds significant extra cost to my summer for something that has always been free and I am sure many others will be a little frustrated.

Is there not a better way to do this? Maybe make short term memberships an option?

I’m happy to pay my way as I am not, and likely cannot, become a club member, but in peak periods when the car cark is full I’ll need to pay $10 each day to get back in off the road. Generally I park on the road to ensure I don’t take up parks for paying club members but I might have to change this. At that price it’s cheaper to lunch at Westhaven in Auckland and at least down there they have some good facilities to use.
