Hey NZ Fishing, planning to go on a trip to Cornwallis wharf this weekend for a half day (maybe ~10ish hours) fishing trip.

Just some questions if anyone could please help me out!

Is the wharf still there? Funny question to ask but I was originally planning to go to Murrays bay wharf which I luckily found out that it was closed for reconstruction.

Also, is the wharf a part of the regional park? I can't seem to find info on this so was wondering if anyone had any personal experiences. The gates for the rego park closes at 7pm so might not be ideal.

Thanks for any help, will post some reports after the weekend Big smile

Thanks for the response man! Is there a good spot to park for the wharf? Near Huia road maybe?

Drive through Titirangi, drive past Langholm, turnoff is signposted Cornwallis Wharf so just follow this sign - takes about 15-20 mins drive from Titirangi, plenty of parking by Wharf (check out google maps).

Have not fished from Wharf but is popular - I imagine tides have an impact this Sat low tide is 1018am - if you are burleying as well would be most effective hour before and after change of tide - like I say have not fished there but fishing in channels best times are 1 to 2 hours before and after change of tide.

The Manukau is very tidal so always keep an eye on tides as they affect the fishing and getting your lines down to bottom.  Heavier sinkers required in flow, lighter sinkers at slack water - this can also affect what fish you catch also.

Good luck!
Good fishing trip nothing breaks, great trip catch fish.

Maybe head to the headland/ rocks on the right as your facing the wharf over the low tide .
I only fish off the wharf with the 8yr old so don't really know what's what but roofless has plenty of time there so I'd ask his advice .Maybe Whatipu or the rocks around from huia may be better .

Cornwallis gets very busy even when the weather is not so good. You can still fish it when there's an easterly you just feel a bit weathered at the end of the day and you need to watch your kit doesn't get blown in the water.
When the tides running, a 4oz breakout sinker is a good option however even this will not hold its location and will get dragged. The best fishing seems to be when the current is not in full flow.
The fishing isn't usually that hot there but fish do get caught. The most common catch is kahawai, you can also get trevs and there should still be some gurnard around at this time of year. When it warms up you usually get plagued by baby snaps, chances of a keeper size snap are usually pretty slim. Through the summer there are usually a few kings hanging around too which can be an awesome sight when they're sitting in the current under the wharf.
It's possible to walk round the rocks to the right hand side and get right out to the point from about 1.5-2 hours after high with a bit of climbing over some boulders. The walk takes about 25-30 minutes, you'd want to watch out for seals chilling on the rocks at this time of year, they cant get a bit agro when you almost step on them when you climb over a boulder, but usually bugger ff out of your way. Just don't block their path to the sea.
I haven't fished there for a few years so don't know what it's like these days. Don't let the wind put you off, just take some warm clothing and waterproofs

Early is best on nice days when it comes to parking. Very early is better if you want a spot on the end of the wharf. Used to fish there regularly long time ago but often it got packed with people. Still a nice spot to go to with the kids because they always catch something small and are happy about it.
Now I prefer the rocks at Huia or Whatipu for surf casting.

Went early in the morning and stayed till about noonish because of the weather and wind. Current was strong and the wind was too Cry

Used some salmon berley and managed to catch some piper and a 45cm kahawai so not the worst I suppose! Great place to go to though, awesome atmosphere. The group next to us caught a bronze whaler I THINK, was about 80 to 1 m, was a bit far away so couldn't tell very well.

Thanks to everyone for the help, might visit the rocks next time Smile

Tides have to be considered in Manukau - what time of tide did you catch Kahawai?  In boats usually in some flow best not full flow or slack water, congrats on Kahawai are very underrated for eating - keep cold, bleed it when caught and eat fresh - also is very nice raw.  Is better than what you can buy in shops as fresh.  Usually catch something when I go out and if it is Kahawai which is most common that is fine but Gurnard better Wink.
See a lot of guys fishing from road around rocks before Little Huia and also walking round rocks at little huia.
Good fishing trip nothing breaks, great trip catch fish.

Not sure exactly what time it was but I would guess around 6 or 7 (maybe near 8) as it was soon after we arrived. I gave straylining a go because I've read a lot about how it's great for catching bigger fish (not sure if this was the right move), but that Kahawai was the only thing that really gave any bites. Nonetheless still satisfied with the trip Smile

used to spend a lot of time on that wharf most weekends from the age of about 12 I used to go down and sit there fishing rain hail or shine
mum used to drop me off in the morning and ring or text me every couple of hours
sometimes id stay all day

and sometimes even after school id go for a fish

most common catches where kahawai gurnard and in summer the odd legal snapper you had to catch a lot of undersize ones to catch one legal one
ive got one legal kingfish but seen a lot caught

there was also massive amounts of jackmacks to be caught in summer

I've moved from out there now and also own a boat so I haven't been there in 5 or 6 years
keep up the good work boys
