NZ Herald 13/09/2016. Surely this can't be New Zealand?

The criticism was made in a letter to the Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy obtained by the
Herald.

New Zealand's decision to monitor fishing practices with a watchdog owned by the industry would not be acceptable in the United States, Canada or Australia, an international monitoring company has told the Government.

"The public should be concerned when companies providing monitoring services are not independent from the industry they monitor," McElderry wrote.

Howard McElderry, vice-president of Archipelago Marine Research, said appointment of a company owned by the industry it was policing would create a problem proving objectivity any time the data looked questionable.

The Canadian company was the unsuccessful bidder for the contract to monitor via video cameras 15 vessels fishing for snapper and pass the information to the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI).

Not acceptable in the U.S, Canada ,or Australia.

Basically called state control, based on Governments unlimited power.

This sort of system does not bring prosperity ,but eventually economic paralysis or collapse to every country that has tried it.

A great example of fishing industry and govt being "very close" to one another.

Moweman - do you think that some of the unwanted by-catch will be minced through a machine and sprayed back into the sea??????

This can't be serious surely, why not land the by-catch and distribute it through to the public as affordable whole fish?

If what you say is correct then insanity now rules this government!

Have heard that very recently from someone else that used to frequent this forum ...

what is the difference between minced bycatch and all the burley rec fishermen use?

You have to ask? Really? Are you seriously trying to tell us they will mince all the unwanted by catch and juveniles of the target species, pump it all into a slush tank and bring it back to sell as burley, fertilizer or pet food? Maaaaaate! you are joking.
The mincers will be used to hide the evidence of wasteful practices. The "visual evidence" will no longer be seen floating on the surface. It will be pumped out the bottom of the boat. It then becomes a case of out of, out of mind. Viola. No more wastage.

Wasn't what I was saying at all ... I was actually pointing out the similarity between Steady she goes statement (the bit in bold) and the recent mantra from Price of Fish.

Apologies for making a comparison between an imagined practise of comms boats with mincers and an actual habit of rec fishermen to use burley regularly (i prefer plastics and lures, burley and bait is a waste when chasing cod, its too slow)
