I want to tie a few popper this year and would be needing foam. I plan on tieing a slight variation  to the Surf Poppers which have a niche following in Australia. 

Foam heads identical to the above would be ideal, but have been unable to find them. 

These look ideal http://www.anglersworkshop.com/items.aspx?catid=1253 but have not been able to find a similar product in New Zealand.  Would import them but the postage makes them to expensive. 

I was thinking of murdering a old Foam camping mattress?

Another option is to order a bunch of Surf Poppers and dismantle them...

Both, would use some on the fly rod after Kahawai, and some on the surf rigs as a attractor.

Secondary question.

Is it possible to get any of the long shank circle hooks in New Zealand. Thinking of the Gamakatsu SC16 Circle Saltwater Fly Hooks or Mustad C71S Circle Streamer Hook or similar.  

Although they are easy enough to import. 


Just noticed I can get both from Anglersworkshop... mmmm  Might just be able to justify the high postage.

For ones you are going to cast on a fly rod... go to Bunnings or Mitre ten and get some builders foam... pennies per yard... hundreds of poppers...

Thanks, that idea looks perfect and would be a hundred or so dollars cheaper then importing.



I use lead sinkers to add weight when fishing a fly with a surf rod. Basically a floating fly is tied onto the top dropper of a ledger rig. On the bottom dropper is normal bait.

The theory goes, the bait on the bottom hook attracts the attention of other bait fish and predator fish... The large predator fish charges in causing any of the smaller baitfish to scatter except for the 'fly' which is bobbing away innocently in the water, still in attacked mode the predator strikes the fly ignoring the bait. So far I have caught Kahawai, Red Cod and Spikey Dogfish on them.

Seems like I can also get a limited range of the Mustad C71S SS hooks in NZ Smile , but would have to get a few sizes from Aus which might just be easier.

You get a red cod on a popper I'll take it! Mind you, it takes a lot red cod to add up to $50 worth.

I wonder how putrid a bag of Red Cod would be after a couple of days in the post.... 

Have caught a dozen or so on the Surf Poppers before....  I think I could  catch them on the fly rod.... Good burley going, then use a fast sinking line and drag the popper just off the bottom.

Here's a couple I made recently from a bit of foam I found in the rubbish:
 
 
Mili, you can also cut up an old jandal made of closed cell foam and shape the heads using drill as a lathe.

Builders foam (backing rod) wrapped in self adhesive mylar sheets from te ware Whare with big doll eyes glued on works well too.

Did you end up importing hooks mili?

found a 1mby1m foam in my garage tied up plenty of
crease flies tied up about 20 and they are really effective
and my mum is a smoker so i use the white butt things
on the inside for a bit extra flotation and forms a good cup
with a bit tying paint will post some pics soon

I've tied up a bunch of big poppers using some cheap white foam from a craft shop.
 
Going out on my Dads boat after the kingfish around banks peninsular, I might see if a few others from the Cantabury fly fishers club want to come along, should be great

You can import them from Australian Ebay for a few dollars each... Think I imported 8 and it cost me $16.00 inc postage.
