Hi.. can someone help me with any good fishing spots out Pauanui ways that are relatively easy to get to?  Any suggestions as to the best bait to use for whatever fish you're most likely to find there? I know how to cast.. that's about it - so any help is appreciated.  Tah :)

for what i can see on google earth (LOL) there are some rocks around the coast that you can fish off. pick a good place, not too weedy or fast current. as for bait, you can use anything from squid to pilchards, kahawai fillets, trevally fillets, prawns work well. you can pick some bait up from the local servo (gas station). use a ledger or dropper rig (link at bottom). cast out, wait for the sinker to sink to the bottom (leaving the reel free to take line). then put tention on the line so you can feel the bites, and hopefully be ready for the strike....

good luck Thumbs Up

Snag city if ya fish that rig along that peice of coast. Its reasonably shallow foul with lots of kelp so i'd be inclined to strayline with unweighted or very lightly weighted baits.

Its a bit of a low tide spot too as acess is restricted to 3 hours either side of high but can be fished over the high tide if you want too as long as there isnt too much of a swell.

Good spot for snapper but turns up the odd kingfish too so dont be suprised if ya hook in to something fairly decent!

fishing at the river mouth is good (I THINK) to fish... somwhere where you can get above sea level, but have access to the sea. have a look around.. even go into your local tklce shop and have a chinwag on where to fish....theyll even teach you how to tie a rig LOL.... good luck on your travels Thumbs Up

fish between the boat ramp and the harbour entrance, with small skipjack baits + 3/0 to 4/0 size hooks.

better still use pipi etc for bait

lots of trevally come in to feed on the shellfish beds at high tide

good sized ones among them too.

wouldnt use any weight out there if your heading from the rocks.. what are you targetting, alot of kahawai around there atm,

Or you could use a running rig with BOS in the river mouth  - just dont be a muppet and look out for boats best to fish there very very early morning or night time, seen a old maori lady out there one night catch a 15bl snapper, said she fishes there all the time and usually gets something for tea at least.

Is there any good fish in the actual mouth  (Pauanui)at this time of year.
I'm there this weekend.
I see it has a nice inlet and I would be fishing on the Pauanui side off the sand. Is it worth spinning or stray lining?
Does anyone know what is being caught in the mouth at the moment?
Thanks

Heaps of Fisho's are reading this, but no one is posting. What's happening in the mouth lately?

want2fishmore - you might find that no-one reading this has fished there lately, or that most wouldn't really consider fishing off the sand into the entrance when there are other more attractive looking ledges or beaches with less boat traffic up and down that bit of coast.

I fished off the little jetty on tairua side of entrance. Hooked up twice w livebaits on in coming tide but both times busted off...pretty sure they were kingis. Plenty of piper so used live one under balloon. Use heavy tackle to stop fish quickly
