Hi all, I am visiting Waihi beach over Christmas/New year and planning to take my daughter fishing. Would appreciate any tips/advice on where best to fish (shore, rocks, harbour etc) and whats the best tackle/method to use.

Many thanks

Martin

Anzac bay at the south end of Waihi Beach, easy walk over the hill to the point...a good ledge to fish into the channel, there is also a small sheltered jetty on the left of Anzac you can fish off. There is also a small beach on the seaward side of the point that has been good fishing for me, dont fish it with any swell tho.
Many rock platforms at north end of Waihi Beach heading round towards Orokawa bay that are well worth fishing, some are quite hard to access tho due to climbing down rocks, again be mindful of any swell.
Take a drive south to Kauri Point Wharf, I have landed Kingfish to 20kgs at that time of year, a real easy and very productive spot for kingfish, snapper, john dory etc but pays to get there early to secure a spot and sometimes gets quite busy.
Damn...I miss the B.O.P.!!!!

Try surf casting straight off the main beach - especially down towards the southern end before the Coastguard. Look for guts and channels at low tide during the day then head back down at change of light in the evening. You need to fish into the dark a bit.
Word of caution though, fishing can be pretty tough around here over the christmas period. We really struggled last christmas.
As Snoteel says, Kauri Point wharf is a really popular spot and plenty of good fish have been landed from here, but around that time of year the sea lettuce can become a real pain - you shouldn't be affected by that on the main beach
