Tobes' said something very interesting on another thread in The Work Up and thought it would make a good thread of it's own....

"is there any special marking that a marlin shows while carrying eggs, its a bit of long shot but somewhere like the eye, same as with snappers???"

are you saying that there is a way one can tell the difference between a female snapper in roe and one that isn't?.....

I wasn't even aware there was an obvious way to tell the difference between male and female snapper with out actaually gutting them?

I for one would be more than happy to release all female snapper, if there is a way to distinguish.

anyone????

This will be interesting. I would have thought sexing a snapper would have been imposible until you gut them.

Fish Facts: What makes a snapper tick? April 2003 NZ Fishing News - Kydd Pollock...

......

"It is only around the spawning season that the coloration of the male snapper may become very vibrant and the region beneath the chin develops dark gray patches. Apart from this it is virtually impossible to split the sexes without killing the fish and taking a better look in he gut cavity" ...

There was also a photo showing the difference.

So based on that you could say you could determine likely male snapper, but still no indication of definite female ones

......those are the K'rd variety Adam!

Thanks Alimat.....good info there from someone in the know (Kydd).....I have caught snapper with "grey chins" in the past expecting them to be male but whoomp there it is...a gut full of roe.

I am sure I am not the only one that would be happy to let go the fairer sex?

The male ones develop a blue marking under or over there eye when in spawning/schooling mode.

No scientific evidence but something I have noticed. In alot of the photos you see it clearly. Might be talking thru a hole...............

No , wife still has not craked it off yet but hope she does shortly. Might be able to get out in the boat when I have my week off................

let's all keep an eye (pun intended) on this one....

blue markings around a snappers eyes during the spawn  = male gonads?

I certainly hope this turns out to be accurate because I can see a campaign to educate anglers and code of ethics being created.

quick!---->..get some clean water and boil some towels!!

I remember filleting a few one day - 100% of the males had the "blue" mark. The females did not - may have been coincidence.
