Hi Guys, I'm totally new to this forum, huge thumbs up, this is truely a great web site.

Myself and two other ex pat brits are joining a charter on Divercity with Damo, just wondering if any forum members are part of this charter, if so it would be great to hear any advise you could give us on what to expect, what kind of gear to bring, bait, SP's and so on.

cheers!!!

Thanks for the welcome feeder, cold and fizzy is indeed better, but it's still not real. Been here 7 years now, only found out about the joys of fishing for snapper last year, so still a newbie really, always keen to learn and experiance every thing that is great about New Zealand including the beer!!

Thanks Boz19 I should do that.

Still be nice to be introduced to people that will be on the boat, get a few hints and tips, swap a few tales (tall and short).

Nice fish , Damo will tell ya what rigs been working at the time . He knows whats working so  tie up the rig he suggests.Take Some 60 or 80 pd trace 6/0 and 8/0 hooks .A variety of sinkers from 2 to 5 ounce and some pre tied snapper flashers rigs with circle hooks .He is still fishing a variety of depths from 4 mtrs to 40 so coutas may come into the equation.Good luck on your trip.

Nice Snapper man!

Diversity is a nice looking boat to fish from - yep Damo will put you onto the best rigs at the time as of2fsh says - check with him a few days before to see what's the go. But most of the time a flasher rig with squid will work wonders - you'll need up to 10oz weights to attach on the bottom of the rig.

Anything Macs produce is a great beer, having one right now, cheers!

(sssh don't tell anyone but I do like Boddingtons it's VERY nice).

Cheers guys, thanks for the advise, looks like we will need to fill up the tackle boxes and be ready for whatever the conditions throw at us. Love to use the pre made flasher rigs, never seen any with circle hooks, where can you by these from?. Will probably try and contact damo during the week before. Look forward to meeting you Mouthu and your mates, it should be a great day, my mate did his dive ticket on divercity, he reckons it's one of the best boats he has ever been on. Keep the advise coming, alway keen to learn anything that might catch a snapper or two. The fish in the picture was caught at the "Graveyard" late December. Can reccomend fishing the kaipara I've been three times now with Ray Scott and never failed to catch our limit + lots of KY's, Gurnard, Kingfish and SHARKS!!!!, his boat is called Dream Rider. HAPPY DAYS!!!

Pommie Guy pm Uncle on this site as he manufactures what I consider to be the best flasher rigs in NZ for snapper using nothing but the best in gear with a unique knot system that many have tried to copy. He will post these to you for a few $$. Not as cheap as you may find elsewhere but well worth the little bit extraThumbs%20Up

Pommy Guy, the guy's are right, Damo will do all that is humanly possible and beyond to put you on to the action. I was out with him on Diversity in what one could describe as slightly less than perfect conditions yesterday and he still managed to pull one out of the hat for me and the 8 others on the boat.
We got a few nice fish, and one of the boy's got his first Snap over 6kg, I also managed to nail my first fish on soft baits, there's no turning back now !!!!!

Hi everyone, Just got rid of the Whanau today, they have been here since wed night & I have busy busy busy Clap, so this is my 1st chance to get on here, & I saw this. Yep mum & I will be on that Charter. So thats 8 so far counting you 6.
Basically I've just been gearing up with anything I can think will be good, after reading up on here & the mags, plus input from Damo.

Will probably take our 2 x 20lb bread n butter rods plus an extra reel, 2 x softbait & a couple of heavy casting and livebait gear for whatever, so thats 6 sets for us 2, but doesnt quite seem enough Wink

I sent Damo a list of questions because we had never been on a charter like this before, we are mainly Rangitoto Channel Fishers. I'll put it up here so you's fullas can squiz at it.

Mum and I dont really drink, I gave it up before I finished 20 years in the navy 6 years ago, although we will have the odd beer or wine.

Heres the Questions Guys: You may think of a couple more but this sets me on the right track.

  1. What type of gear should we bring, OR should I say HOW MUCH?? Because we have all types of gear available to us, even as Channel Fishers? 6-10kg mono normally is plenty
  1. What type of bait and how much would you suggest for this time of year, for where we may go? Pilchards and squid are the most popular baits we also fish with fresh live/dead baits too that we catch during the day 2-3 kg pilchards 2kg squid ought to do it.
  1. Can we bring Soft Baits with us? Feel free 4-6lb braid is best and make sure you have some 1oz jig heads for the deeper water/high current
  1. How do we pay? Pay on the day cash or pre pay your trip via credit card or internet banking
  1. Do we pay a deposit up front, and if the weather causes cancellation, what refund do we get? No deposit required for casual trips
  1. What is the departure and return time? You will be advised but normally 0700-0800 with a return of 1600-1630
  1. Are we required to help clean the boat after returning that night? No but most guys give it a hose off as we head for home which is appreciated of course.
  1. Do we bring our own chilly bin for on the boat? You can BYO bins or we can slurry you fish for you marked so you know whose is whose and then sort them when we dock BYO is probably best though.
  1. If we catch fish are they ours? Or is the days catch distributed throughout everyone on the charter? The fish you catch and would like to keep are yours.
  1. Do we get our fish cleaned when returning or can we clean them somewhere on return to Gulf Harbour? You can clean you fish on the way back in but this would require a more through clean up its up to you. There is no facility for cleaning fish at the marina most guys take them whole or gill and gut on the way in.
  1. Do you supply free tea or coffee? And milo and cup of soups

Lastly is there anything that you may think off that we could bring to assist us in making our first Charter a memorable one. A smile, some patience and clothing suited to the weather a lot of our fishing is done on the drift and can be a little wobbly so if you suffer from sea sickness I would suggest taking medication the day before as directed on the packaging

PS: Will be taking note of this last suggestion, because even though I have sea time under my belt, I still get the odd Mal De Mer on small boats IE anything smaller than a warship hehe.
