Spinning reels are widely used for popping worldwide.
But conventional reels are still popular among long range boats out California.
I have had hard time to convince them the advantages of using spinning reels for popping.

This is our first charter on the Excel out of San Diego for jigging and popping. Most guys use light tackle and spinning reels which is extremely rare on long range boats. Some used jigs and popper and some used live bait.
But I predict more anglers start to use spinning reels for casting jigs or popper on the long range boats out of California.

I'm sure they will. Will always take a while for some to switch. Great to see right handed anglers fishing right handed as well. Makes life so much easier. Especially with the drag pressure the latest spinning reels put out.

It is hard to convince long range boats anglers to use spinning gear as they have their own world. :)
But not everyone is a good caster with conventional rods and backlash is enevitable which can cause problems when fishing is hectic.

Here is a video of casting for bluefin on the Vagabond out of San Diego. Bluefin showed up in big number close to San Diego for the first time last year and they respond to poppers.  I gave up fishing and I took this video.
