What's the opinions of the CD XLS as a replacement for an 8 wt GHR, I recently broke?
Some options are; another GHR, a HTC or XLS. I like the lifetime warranty.

Hi fishB8
Check carefully about what the lifetime warranty with CD rods is

http://www.cdrods.co.nz/About+Us/Warranty+Program.html?id=HMsa3Fcw

I think you will find the lifetime warranty is not against breakage but against fault or workmanship.

Have you thought about Hardy Rods

Hardy have a good product range at present with a range of price points.

Hardy had lost ground to some of the other international brands, for the first time in over a decade and a bit they are mixing it up with the better rods out there at the moment.

As a replacement to your broken rod you could get a pleasant surprise in regards to what you can get as a replacement

A lot of manufacturers have the same thing, unless they have a "no questions asked" policy.
Practically, if they can't prove that the breakage was cause by misuse or done intentionally the warranty covers it.

My Downunder is an unconditional warranty, and I supposed the rest would be the same. Maybe not.
So what would be a good replacement. The XLS cost is the max I'm prepared to pay. Lesser would be better. Gamefishing as well as trout isn't a cheap combination!

The ICT replaced the GHR, so I reckon that would be a good way to go. But can't you just get your GHR fixed?

Didd break a GHR rod once, the blank was way too thin in the walls in my opinion.  Would highly recommend a Sage, great rods and the life time warranty is unconditional (to the original purchaser) which means the rod  would be repaired or replaced even if you deliberately broke the thing.

Since we're heading "off topic" - get a Sage VT2! Probably the best rod for the money anywhere! And it's within your price range.

but you did ask about CD so stick to the thread...I just took a CD/reddington nqti that i broke on a mahimahi and they made new section for $60 and quick. that was no warranty and the service was excellent.

Ian - good idea sticking to topic / question raised.

While much is said about the CD rod breakages I think Ian is the first every to raise just how well CD can look after the customer and get them back on the water with their CD rod.

I lost a top half of a rod - I got a replacement top half at a seriously hot price

So for all the warranties that sage offers CD provides a outstanding service - I would say forget about trying to get a free replacement but look at how little it can cost to replace a broken section and how quickly you can get back out on the water again

Good call Ian!!!!!!!

Well I'm now convinced to send my GHR back to CD for a repair. When I first bought my GHR, I broke 2 tips in the first 12 months.
A game rod that I managed to break the end off (my own fault)was repaired free, just handling costs. Another game rod broke after 6 years, a year out of warranty, and they sold me a replacement at "cost", which was half the shop price. A lot to be said for local suppliers.

The break was 8 inches above the first join, in the mid section.

A mate of mine broke his GHR a few years back. I broke my old SAGE RPL a couple of days later. I got mine back after 3 weeks, from the US (wasn't bought in NZ). My mate got his replacement 3 months later....

Ian,  yes you are right about the Sage Lifetime Warranty,  intentional breakage is about the only thing not covered. Who in their right mind would damage one in any case.  And yes I know we should all support the local market ,  some people on here may even work for Composite Developements.  Personally,  I  would chose a Sage fly rod .

In New Zealand Ian, it pretty much is from my experience. The ads in FlyLife were placed because of people who were not Sage dealers finding a way of back dooring the product and the advertising campaign was done to make it clear that if the rod was not purchased from one of their official and approved dealers the warranty wouldn't be honored.

However in New Zealand I have not seen Don Fraser refuse a repair or at least not go out of his way to ensure the warranty could be met wherever possible including carrying literally hundreds of spare rod parts to ensure that a turn around of a few days is possible in most situations.

You are also correct regarding TFO. Their warranty is good and Feather Merchants have provided exceptional service in this regard. Many peop-le also have, obviously, good experiences with CD.

But I believe a bit of focus has been lost by dwelling on warranties... A warranty is a great thing to have in a fly rod and in the case of breakage gets your rod fixed and you back on the water pronto... but looking at which rods are most prone to breakage is more important because no matter how good a warranty is if your rod breaks it is nearly always going to mean downtime from fishing for that rod in your arsenal... I would prefer to never have to use a warranty than to judge a rod brand by it warranty. If a rod breaks five times and is repaired with no fuss or cost.. is that superior to a rod that doesn't break but has a lesser warranty...???

I'd suggest pick the rod for you first then look to warranties. You can tell here in this thread that most companies will want to look after you where possible so it makes sense to me to simply go for the best rod your money can buy.

There are a lot of different opinions here as to which are the best rods and I've never made a secret of my preference... But casting and fishing with one is the best way for any individual to judge what they prefer. Ask your shop for the opportunity.

If you can't find a shop that will let you do this, send me a PM and I'll organize a Sage for you to take out and fish with and make a personal decision on.
