i always wondered, since i usually read that Snapper would eat anything, can i use raw meat (beef, lamb, chicken .. etc) as bait?

Yeah why not but I believe if you caught a 40 odd pound snapper you could not claim a record.

I fed snapper sandwiches and pies before they gobble them down LOL

Cook up some cheap Mad Butcher sausages I bet they will go good.

Hi ATS-A while ago I used a bit of blade cats meat over a reef and got 3 congers quick smart. Used one of the congers for bait as it was gut hooked and got snapper immediately. I guess over sand or mud OK but that was the reef story.

I recommend a freshly plucked Kereru, speed jigged. Remember to tape the beak shut, otherwise it will just fill with water and not look natural

I have heard so many tales, yet in my observation, fish prefer, by a very long margin to eat fish and fish based food. The raw meats etc can be eaten by fish, but in general and to help you catch fish...no, wasting valuable fishing time.

Also once was fishing and eating KFC and throwing the bones over caught a 15lb snapper and when i got home checked its guts to see what it had been eating and it was full of chicken bones.

snapper are scavengers and will eat anything, but yes meat is not a natural food but when snapper are hungry they don't care,
we caught one once its breath was that foul like the worst stink ive ever smelt, we cut it free, what it had been eating i have no idea but what ever it was it was rotten to the core...

even boiled potatoes, garbage collectors of the sea, makes you wounder sometimes just how dumb fish can be...
just look at the lures we throw at them today, and why do's orange stand out or even multi colours, what do they see in them????
they can blow every thought you ever had about what works, but on the day they will either turn their nose up at it or just commit suicide...

Some good puns there, we did use liver in kero until we got a Trev or kawhai and then that was the bait.
Mussels were always pickled in jars, so used to take them from the cabinet the fish and always are well.
In the last few years and done before but sometimes those prawns are so cheap a feed and bait.

Meat really for us was eels.
Still cruising in my now sweetas pimped out Southern 755 HT0!

Careful using meat in coastal areas in the country, we don't want the snapper roaming freely over the farmers paddocks looking for the next kill, the poor buggas have got enough on their plate with the low milk prices!
slowly going where everyone else has already been
