Hi,

Is it ok to use a breakaway sinker with a fish finder set-up? I worry that the arrangement of the sinker being on top might lead to the hook trace getting tangled in the wires? Anyone used this rig with a breakaway sinker?

Thanks.

Hi Nick, thanks for your inquiry.  I'm not sure what you mean by a 'fish finder' set up. Often local descriptions of different rigs etc can see many different names for the same thing.

From your description my guess is you are casting from the shore and you have a breakaway sinker on your mainline with a swivel as a stopper then a trace below it with two hooks. Is that correct? I'll try  and find a pic of a set up like that unless you can post one up?

Is this it? I'm not a surfcaster so can't really offer much help but I'm sure someone with more experience in that field than I could help you.

Thanks for the reply, yes that's it. I've heard that it can also damage the fish when you're reeling it in. Thanks.

Well as I say I have very little surfcasting experience but I wouldn't be too concerned about it tangling up and it may damage the fish if the trace was short but I doubt it. One way to find out is to try it! Have you considered using a pulley rig or even a single hook dropper rig?

Where are you fishing and what have you been catching?

I've used that rig alot when surfcasting on sandy beaches and have never seen any damage on the fish due to a breakaway sinker. Half a pilchard tied on with elastic cotton worked well.
