Lee Hurley of Brisbane had a good morning today with me and Terry Newcombe on the Water Taxi. He landed a six  kilo fish at the crack of dawn on his own pattern fly tied using one of the new fish skulls.
 
 
 
To top it off an hour later he landed one twice as big! A huge 12 kilo fish on the same fly.
 
 
 
 
The photo is not the best but Lee was struggling to hold it up and was keen to get it back in the water for a healthy release. There are some better pics on Lee's camera.
 
 
For an idea of its size check out the size of the same fly in this things head..
 
 
 
 
Later on a smaller fish skull fly that I had tied accounted for quite a few pannie snapper. It was a good copy of the millions of anchovies that are in the BOI's at the moment.
 
Despite the trophy captures, the fishing was not "going off". A beautiful day with plenty of snapper schools present on the sounder but few biting.
 
Lee was happy though. Go the fish skulls!

Tight Lines distribute them so ask just about any sports or fishing shop and they'll be able to get them in if they don;t have them in stock.

Didn't think much of the skulls straight away. Mainly because they don't fit my favourite Gami SL12s (the manufacturer claims that a larger holed version will be coming out soon). When you see them in the water though you realise that they hold the fly nice and straight (the skull has proportionally more weight under the chin) and give it a very good forward dipping jigging action. They may be on to something.

Fishing! The only reason for getting up early. It paid off too. I think I've figured out some of the principles behind nailing snapper on fly when they're thirty metres down. And I'm keeping it a secret Smile
 
I've been putting the skulls on backwards and then shoving some bits of lead wire in behind them for extra weight. Then tie fly material on top of wire. Not as pretty as putting them on front ways but enables you to get them on a bigger hook.
