Is there anything more heavy duty around than the red kevlar stuff?

Getting a bit tired of donating No35 gammys to the scourge of the sea.

I was using single strand stainless wire for a while but it was a bit hard to work with.

Any ideas?

We now have the Zest wire assists but they are on the standard hook.

Yeah those TU35's are expensive but good.   I've made my own wire assists, buy some wire trace and some very small black copper crimps. Make sure you install the solid rings on first, finish with heat shrink tubing and they can be quite pro looking.

Benk, have you tried using rubber lumo tubing to protect the cord? The heatshrink don't seem to last more than a couple of slashes from the razor gang.

Ben, you can try the #70 kevlar which is rated at 700 lb. Although it's quite thick and is better suited to bigger jigs. Best thing coutta normally can't get through it by the time you boat them. You have to import it though.

Chris' suggestion sounds the best though.

Yeah, I think importing something will be best.

Its not the boating of the cuda that really worries me its just before you drop the jig again, pretty much have to change assists. Pain in the ass.

Cheers

The only bite-proof cord I know is called Zylon and made by YGK.  Unfortunately this material has been discontinued but you can probably pick up old stock from some of the Asian tackle stores.

I've tried it and it lasts about as long as the heatshrink - mind you, that was the soft lumo tubing. The harder stuff has got to be better.

Just got some lumo assist cord with wire in it. I'll see how it goes next week at the Ranfurly.

The lumo assist cord with wire sounds interesting chopsticks. Any pics?

I rigged up an assist hook with 400lb nylon double last night. What do you guys reckon?

Seems like a nice stiff rig that swings around really well. The downside is that I cannot easilly change it without cutting off the swivel from the leader. The 400lb mono is just too stiff to loop on to the solid ring.

Mono is an interesting approach; might work quite well.

I'll post a pic tomorrow of the lumo assist cord.

Yeah man, they look pretty deadly. I think Ill buy some thinner single strand and try something similar.

Although I really like the idea of 400lb mono. Never had a cuda or gemfish cut through it, and it would have to be pretty well used to break on hook up to a kingy!

All good idea guys!

Let the slaughter begin...

Top: Fisherman Siden 808 13/0  - Kevlar 700lb assist cord.

Bottom: Gamakatsu Tuned 35 - Owner 150lb Powerflex - (lumo dyneema with wire core). The cord length is left long for twisting.

I'll give you some to try Chris. It doesn't loop very well on the solid ring though. I want to try the "Ledathene" that Jimi uses.
