Hi Joebo, welcome.

Check out Greg Smeals reports in NZ Fishing News, I think he also writes for the Whakatane Beacon.

I would have thought you were living in landbased heaven!?

Look up his address in the phone book, stalk & follow him!

failing that, try a drive East, Te Kaha way. Any of those rocky points would have to be worth a go. Good luck

Ps. If he turns on you when you stalk him, don't tell him I suggested this!

I tried clicking on the web-site, all I got was a new message box to e-mail him.

Not much point in that now you have him "captive"!

If you really want him to squeal, try the old Chineese water torture trick.!

Hi joebo,

I havent done any surfcasting down that way, I can only tell you where Ive seen people catch fish from the shore and were lots of people seem to go. I see  lots of surfcasters up at Matata , Ive seen heaps of people catching Kahawai down at Thorton heads, Ive never seen anyone land anything at the Whakatane heads. Another place I would try is on the far side of Ohewa harbour the channel cuts close to shore and would be easy to flick a line into the center of it or close to it. God only knows how to get to that side of the harbour, cause I only go there in the boat. Ive had a little success last trip there (Ohewa harbour) a few snapper and kahawai, and got monstered on 6kg on a floating pillie (more like surfing in that current). Anyway good luck

Wefaknis

Joebo,

I'm an ex local of those parts. Try Coastlands, either beach facing road or off the road to the golfcouse. Surf casting is better on the Matata side of the Whakatane river and the Opotiki side of the Ohwa harbour.

In the Ohiwa harbour is good. try down near the Ohope golf course. The wharf has given me many nice snapper and a few kingis as well.

Greg runs the "iceman" shop on the Whakatane wharf. He is helpful and worth a talk to. Any of the local tackle shops should be able to give you some help.

Rock fishing arround the Whakatane heads and west end are also good options and the Whakatane river mouth produces some nice Kahawai and tevally at times too.

I always try to avoid Ohope beach as I have not had much luck there with anythin other than a longline at 700-800m out.

Tight lines

Moonfish :-)
