Generally,most kiwis are wanting one rod to do both popping and stickbaiting.
A popping rod is stiffer in the tip to "pop" poppers.Popping is more than just winding a lure acroos the surface - cast take up the slack and rip the rod to make the lure dig in and surge foward,let the lure sit take up slack and repeat.
A stickbait rod it softer in the tip to really give that swim bait some action,and to not rip the lure out of the water on the sweep.
A pure stichbait rod will saturate when trying to work and cast a large poppers,or a larger stick baits than what it is intended to do.
A rod that can do both really well is worth the money,let me know when you find one.
About 8ft long rod rated to cast lures up to 150g,PE 5-6,with a 8,000-10,000 or 4500- 5000 sized reel.
Trace 80lb - 130lb
This would get you going and cover both techniques adequately.This type of sport like jigging can be basic or complicated,the more you ask of one set the more complicated it can become.
Do your own research and listen to the advice you receive with an open mind,alot of it will come from people who are out there doing it and have been for a while.
There has been good advice offered on here from people like Ginga,sometimes it falls on deaf ears,and I wonder why they asked in the first place.
All I can say is try and get out there amongst it and see what gear is available,it can be hard to catch fish this way also but it is really rewarding and spectacular when you do,so put the time in down at the jetty in between trips out to see and pratice your casting and swimming technique.
