Hi all

Can anyone tell me any of the camping grounds up past Colville such as Fantail Bay, Port Jackson and Fletchers have cabin type accomadation or is it only camp sites up that way.  I tried the old google search but couldn't find anything much about them apart from run by DoC.  I'm keen to get out on the rocks but the other half doesn't want to be tenting during winterSmile

Cheers

Yeah the doc camps are all pretty basic up there. Colville farm is a good spot to stay tho - has houses and cabins to rent but it is back in colville. Always base ourselves there for comps as its a nice central location and depending on wind/swell direction you can go from there to either coast with ease.

Campervan might be your best option though if you want to base yourselves up the top. Slow drive there and back though!

Check this out - I've only ever tented up there, but ther seems to be more options these days.
There's also a DOC hut at Stony bay - pretty basic, but hot & cold running water, shower & flush toilet to keep the missus happy.

fletcher also has (or had?) a couple of caravans or the option to sleep in the woolshed which is kitted out with kitchen facilities etc.

Other option is Otautau Bay campground. The caravans are pretty crappy but there is an attached flat on the back of the main house that has heat pump (other half will be nice and toasty which will keep you in the good books), kitchen, seperate bedroom etc etc. Only hasle is that you still have to drive a bit to get up to any ledges.

It's that woolshed at Flecthers that is now the "backpackers". Never stayed in there though. It's quite far back from the water and I prefer to be close to the sea with a fire and the sound of the swell washing up on the beach (get's you proper in the mood for fish).

Campervan would probably be the perfect compromise.
Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish caught will we realise we can't eat money.

Yeah, the shed at Fletchers is a good bet. Otherwise you can camp at PJ which is a good spot on the beach (Saul I'm with you on that mate). On the other side there's a campground at Stony Bay and basic huts or accom at Sandy Bay.
Great part of the world for some fishing mate - hope it goes well up there and the missus is suitably happy with whatever accom you get!

Fletchers has a DOC runned backpackers about 100-150 meters from the sea.
Good accommodation for $25pp per night. Very clean & well equipped.
(you will go back there again)
Woolshed is half that price & very basic setup… more for the boys trip hard out fishing.

The farmer who used to run Fletchers camp ground ends his lease up there in July, have met some of regulars who plan to have a bit of a send off for him… after 20 years looking after us…… just go there for that mate.

Rock fishing about 40 mins to "the chair", or try off the beach over the hill there to the eastern side. You want an outgoing tide & the rocking fishing spot is 2hrs either side of low

Hi Sam McK - Another option is to try Zander & Catherine Ward at Port Jackson, they own the farm there and have a couple of cottages which are available for rent. I do not know what they charge. Their phone number is 07 8666979. They are really nice people.

I heard when Jim leaves Fletchers, that will be the end of the woolshed accommodation too.
