Hi there

I'm fairly new to fishing and have only gone out for snapper so far (and a few gurnards!) with some success (3 or 4 good size fish per trip)

I want to give it a go with Kingfish. I have the gear, just need to figure out where to find them.

Heard about A buoy, but struggling to find it. I'm heading out this Saturday early morning, so anybody has any pointers? GPS coordinates would be great! I normally launch off Browns Bay or Takapuna.

Hopefully this works.

Good luck but i'd be surprised if a legal one was caught there, although in saying that i've put up two 90 plus on snapper gear inside the 35mtr.

Heard about A buoy, but struggling to find it.

Heading out.. should be able to know where you are even in a heavy rain squall or fog..and any reefs, restricted fishing / anchor areas and ferry / shipping routes

Put navionics on your cell phone and or a tablet if dont have a sounder /gps unit.
You can also get paper maps from the local smart marine/ hunting and fishing, Burnsco etc.
And can be downloaded from the Government LINZ web site free.
These can also be imported into several a free open source navigation programs for PC and cell phones.

This is all very basic safety stuff, just like life jackets.. the difference being is life jackets are used when things go wrong because of poor navigation information...

Plenty of legal kings have been pulled from "A" buoy by us and others in the past.

Generally lower light conditions are the best time with surface lures but a cast jig can also work.

This pic shows a school of 1m kings (hooked and sighted) racing back to the buoy. Kings are mid water over the left black bit with shadows cast over the bottom to the left on the green bit.

There is even the gps marks of "A" if your interested but its very well known.

PS. It was very low light conditions ... Heavy Fog
