Value for money   - 👍
Towing power      -   👍
Warranty               - 👍
Fuel economy      - 👍

It's always going to be personal preference, but I got one last year and wondered why I didnt do it a couple of years earlier.

Plenty of plus for the others utes on the market also, so as I said person preference.

We looked into a heap of 4x4 ute alternatives.. many beyond budget. Tritons Ssangyong, nissan, toyota, coloarado isuzu etc
I have to say, thu , take a LDV for a test run..
It is an experience you will not forget..
When test running take what ever into a full supermarket car parks and park it...The LDV will be an experience..

We settled on the 2.2L Ssangyong.. BUT went across town, Western Ssangyong to buy it... not the local agents as had just been done by commerce commission.. and come across a few ppl who had brought.. bad fitting /sealing ute rear lids/doors miss matched keys etc..

M8 at the same time went for the triton.. and yeah hes still impressed with that.. Takanini agents.

Between the 2, both towing power, price .. but dont have all the auto wipers lights addon on stuff the more expensive utes have.

It came down to things like cabin noise on a trip, ride, seat comfort for us.

Also have a look around our local town/rural area...the number of Ssangyongs .. be it utes or Rextons( same thing  except more up market SUV) .. and so many are

Pre about 2011/12 Ssangyong where not reliable..post all the engineering changed to European...

Either one..would come down to the drive comfort..

PS the Titon has some far, far better colours

Triton are popular as fleet vehicles, as they are cheap, and offer a great warranty.
I think mitsi are struggling to stay in the market, they have very small market share elsewhere in the world.
Their engines have come a long way, earlier ones were troublesome.
I personally did not like their styling, or the very long drawbar distance from the back axle, that doesn't make for a good tow vehicle, but unless you are towing something really heavy...it possibly is a non argument.
Lots seem to like them, and have no grizzles..
I'd take a punt..
you can't fix an idiot with duct tape, but it does muffle them for a while...

Thanks guys.  Cosmo, I started off wanting the Isuzu. Very much a workhorse and would be my second choice which is odd because to me they are at opposite ends of the spectrum. Quite truck like but the Triton may just make my wife a little happier(smart eh?). We bought a Mitsubishi Lancer 3 or 4 years ago and it just gets used for everyone in my household and it has been the most reliable car clocking up around 300k's so she likes Mitsubishi's. With her onside it makes the process much easier Big smile

The Rangers & BT 50's are great but I can't afford one so I'll just write them off as show ponies. The VRXr Mitsis (I think that's the model) are pretty flash but for $7 more I'd probably look at something else.

The Nissans are nice too of course and a mate who has one is really happy with his.

"Ugly"
Is there  'budget" that is not?
Even thu we went the Ssangyong route.. it is doesnt have any near the visual appeal of Toyota, Colorado, Isuzu 'muscle'.
And definitely not the pop colours.
And neither does the new Rino

Yep that sweep up at the rear takes away from the profile, but the triton is far better looker than Ssangyong, and has far better 'pop' colours.
My view was / is comfort on a long trip.

While I know that a lot of the "non-mainstream" brands have come a long long way in the last 5 years or so, buying one is still absolute resale-value-suicide if that's a factor for you. There is no trust in those brands among kiwis generally, it will be another decade of decent vehicles before people in the used vehicle market start to trust them.

Ahh yes resale, that will explain why Ssangyong  dealers areoffering a "Brand Spanking Used" vehicle option similar to the Signature program that Toyota was running here.
They have been advertising used Korangos on TV like new vehicles backed with some kind of warranty, building some trust in the second hand market for their product, very smart move maybe.

The old man has just bought one. Early days but I'm impressed so far. They've definitely sorted out the styling since some of the older models which just looked awful.

We run Rangers and Mitsis in the company fleet. Staff prefer Rangers 'cause they look better, more status haha. But the Mitsis have been super reliable and we are still buying them.

Many of the non main stream brads did not use mainstream compentets...resulting in them going or damn near going bust..

Then they went mainstream...and althu there is still some who live in the past.. not 5yrs but more the 9 to 15yrs (lot happened in that time..) still go the old mentality..

And yeah resale is an issue... IF you are a person with deep pockets and can afford to trade up every couple yrs and/ or just before the 100K km mark.
These vehicles over the last decade , now the run main stream European components, are now hitting consistently over the 300,000 kms mark...
And unlike older mainstream models , dont need expensive fuel pump upgrades.

If you are buying simply for private use, towing the boat, going to work shopping etc, you will most likely be keeping well into the 200K km mark...
And if over 50/55 yr, it will most likely last you as your last  new vechilce for the next 15/ 20yrs plus
Even if it not your last, is re sale really an issue over that length of time?

Also crunch the numbers another way..
you spend $65 or $75 plus on a model that holds a higher resale price, you are still going to drop a good $20/30K plus in 5yrs

Spend say $40/ $45K on a new non mainstream.. that includes nudge bars, steps, canopy, stone deflector, monsoons etc...you are still going to drop (and most likely less) in real dollar value..

There is a very big difference between perception and actual here in more ways than one.

We did the open minded exercise from day one, over a period of around 9 to 12 months, only make the final call when the money from the camaro and vintage cars was in the bank.

Even then came down to comfort of ride.
OH kept the big horn...and that actually rides a little softer, nice on a trip..will pull a bigger weight (officially) but real crap pulling the weight up a hill on the road...with unloaded economy similar, till start to tow.

they are talking about the overhang over in T/M for towing and making it a bugger of a ute for towing due to the overhang from the rear wheels to the towball
