World Record Trout

An American angler has landed a world record rainbow trout from a South Island canal. The fish tipped the scales at 17kg easily beating the 16.5kg record that was landed at Lake Michigan.

Mike Was plucked the trout out of a canal feeding the Tekapo B power station in 20 minutes using 5.4 Kg line.

Mr Was attributed luck as the biggest factor in the catch “to get a fish like that you have be in the right place at the right time”. The 60 year old from Montana has been visiting New Zealand for 20 years and comments that although it’s his biggest trout his biggest fish is 18kg striped bass caught of Cape Cod Massachusetts.
