Whangaroa Gamefishing Update

Recently the striped marlin have arrived in force up north and with our recent One Base Contest getting a lot of  anglers out there, there has been a good opportunity to collect some stats. In the last week or so there has been over 50 striped marlin caught, with most weighed or estimated at 70 – 100kgs, and some up to 115kgs.

Most of them have been caught by Stephenson’s Island or out the back of Stephenson’s in depths ranging from 140 – 200m, with the 200m mark being the most productive.

The next most popular spots have been Wekarua, off Doubtless Bay, Flat Island and the Cavalli Islands. What lures are working at the moment on the marlin? – the lumo has been the colour of choice for a lot of the catches, with green/yellow, fruit salad, purple/black and blue/white also bagging some fish.

The One Base also produced some nice yellowfin tuna around 40kgs which were caught on the 505 and off Cape Karikari, and a few yellowtail kingfish around the 10kg mark have been caught around Stephenson’s Island.
