Whangaroa Gamefishing Update
Just in from Sandra at Whangaroa Big Gamefish Club......
"With the National competition results to analyse there has been a lot of catch reports which for the Whangaroa area fall into two main areas; local catches and those made further north.
Locally, the Whangaroa fleet and our visitors have reported 22 striped marlin either landed or tagged & released, with their weights mainly in the 70 – 90s kg range, caught mainly around the Cavalli Islands, and to the old favourite lure, the fruit salad.
There have also been 12 yellowfin tuna weighing around 30kg + again falling to fruit salad lures, with the slightly bigger fish being found around the Doubtless Bay area. Blue marlin are now making an appearance, with 6 caught lately with a large weight range of 90 – 220kg at scattered locations, the biggest fish being found in 260m off Flat Island. Six yellowtail kingfish just under the 20kg mark have also been caught in the area.
For those anglers venturing northwards to fish the Nationals Contest, they found 56 striped marlin which were certainly of a bigger size, ranging from 70 – 160s kg but their weights mainly from 90 – 120kg, with a few reaching 140kg. These fish were falling mainly for lumos, fruit salads and some to green & yellow lures. Most of these were caught on a nice flat King Bank, but also off North Cape.
One yellowfin was caught off North Cape, a blue marlin and 2 makos on the King Bank, 5 yellowtail kingfish around the 15kg mark (smaller than locally) and a broadbill of 208.5kg came from the Garden Patch. The King Bank was also the home to 2 Bigeye Tuna which fell for lumo lures and were landed and weighed in at 90kg and 106.2kg"
