Whangaroa Gamefishing Update

The last few weeks have been busy recording catches in the area, with 49 striped marlin recorded. 13 have been caught around the Cavalli Islands with a size range of 80 – 110kg, and 11 on the King Bank where the fish are certainly larger having a size range of 130 – 140kg.

Locally, around Stephenson’s Island has produced a few fish, as has the Clayworks, off Flat Island, Wekarua and the Nine Pin trench. Six yellowfin tuna have been caught at various locations along the north-east coast, and weighing in around the 40kg mark.

Three blue marlin have been landed, 2 from the King Bank at 270kg & 300kg (estimated) and 1 off Stephenson’s Island at 220kg. At the Kings, wahoo have also made an appearance with 3 being caught on the same day at 18-21kg.
