Whangaroa Gamefishing Update

There has not been a lot of action this last week out at sea, but listening to the radio there has not been a lot of boats out there seeking the fish, despite reasonable weather. There have only been 3 weigh-sheets from the weigh-station this week – all for yellowtail kingfish with a 23.3kg specimen from off Flat Island, a 15kg tagged off the Ruahine Reef, and a new club pinfish of 24.9kg caught in the Whangaroa Harbour.

There have been reports from skippers that the bottom fishing is very good off the Frenchman, and that there has been some action at North Cape off the Surville Cliffs with the striped marlin. A report from ‘Santana’ one of the few boats to venture out recently, reports 19.4^oc water around the 400m line around the Cavalli Sea Mounts with marlin feeding on shoals of sauri.

A surface long-liner fishing around the Three Kings has also been mopping up the broadbill catching 87 fish, some of which are reported to be greater than 300kg trunked.
