The last week has shown that there are still striped marlin to be found, with locally, one attracted to a lumo lure and tagged and released by keen angler Christine Scott on ‘Odyssey’ in Doubtless Bay.
The Cavalli Islands have been the location for 3 small mako (est. 15kg) caught on pieces of dead skipjack intended for snapper, and the winning snapper of 7.58kg in the club’s recent Great Snapper Classic contest came from the same area, along with 10 other good sized fish weighed in, of 2 – 5kg (mean average 3.12kg).
Cape Karikari also produced some nice snapper of 2 – 7.3kg (mean average 3.83kg), and off Flat Island produced fish of 2 – 6.3kg (mean average 3.93kg). What was the best bait? – dead skipjack produced the most fish, then the old favourites; pilchards, squid, koheru, and the new craze – a Berkley soft-bait ‘Gulp’. The Cavallis have also been home to some good yellowtail kingfish with the charter boat ‘Diomedea’ landing 2 fish at 14.5 and 17.2kg caught on kahawai, and releasing others.
