VHF Online e-Learning courses available now

The course is available for PC and Mac computers or Apple iPad. It provides easy-to- follow explanations of the rules and processes to safely and proficiently operate a Maritime VHF radio. The course is divided into sections to allow those undertaking the course to study at their own pace, whenever and wherever they feel most comfortable doing so.

Taking full advantage of compatible devices, the new VHF Online features a record and playback function in key sections, allowing users to practice and master the modules like never before. The iPad version of the course includes all of the aforementioned features, as well as being the best option for those with varied study environments and tight schedules. Learning is also supported by an online tutor, who can be emailed for remote assistance.

Coastguard Boating Education’s General Manager, Mike Brown, says the new VHF Online has been designed to encourage more boat owners to obtain their Maritime VHF Radio Operator Certificate and to learn how to properly use a Maritime VHF radio.

“While many boaties think that a mobile phone is the only communication device they need on the water, that is definitely not the case,” he says. “Not only are there are many popular cruising areas without good cellular coverage; in the marine environment, mobile phones have a number of serious limitations”.

The updated course is now available for purchase at www.boatingeducation.org.nz. It offers unit standard credits, costs $79, and allows users up to 12 months to complete. Once passed, students are mailed their Maritime VHF Radio Operator Certificate - a qualification which is valid for life.
