Vessel runs aground

On-scene commander Nigel Drake and staff from Environment Bay of Plenty are keeping a close watch on the vessel Lady Luck which grounded off Motiti Island this morning.

Staff flying over the area this afternoon have reported that the vessel is about 500 metres off shore lying on its port side with a 4 - 5 metre long gash on its visible starboard bow. Oil was visible around the vessel but doesn't seem to be reaching the shoreline. Mr Drake thinks that wave and wind action is probably dispersing any spilled oil before it reaches the shore.

Motiti residents have reported debris washed up on the shore from the fishing boat.

Mr Drake expects that the boat could be washed closer to the shore later this afternoon as the high tide approaches. He says that they have considered sending absorbent booms to the area in readiness for any oil spilled but considers that they can helicopter the booms there quickly if needed

The vessel owners have appointed a salvage company from Auckland who will travel to the Bay of Plenty to inspect the vessel later today.
