Summer has produced some great catches and one or two changes to the champion angler leaderboards. Tony Wiles kicked 2022 off by bagging a massive 90cm snapper which was a cracking way to get the New Year started – great job Tony!
Craig Bartlett took over top spot on the gurnard leaderboard with a chunky 51.5cm model, so that’s the one to beat for the Champion Angler trophy to be finalised on May 31 2022.
CRC Champion Angler
We have several new additions to our CRC Champion Angler leaderboard this month. The CRC Champion Angler is a challenge for anglers to catch all three species of snapper, kingfish and kahawai, with the winner having the largest combined length of all three species. There’s still time to get your name on the board!

Craig Bartlett’s gurnard shot him straight to the top of this species’ leaderboard.
Export
A big thanks to Export, the key sponsor for this competition, is due for their ongoing commitment to supporting a measure competition that has a focus on the sustainability of our inshore fishery. Your catch can be kept for food or released – it’s all about the angler having the choice and being able to make the best decision for the catch at the time. All you need is a fish measure which can be bought from your nearest Burnsco store. Measures used for significant tournaments around New Zealand are also acceptable – check the list under ‘rules’ at fishingcomp.co.nz.
Lucky Angler Prize
At the end of each season, one lucky angler will win the major prize and this year it’s bigger and better than ever. Here’s a hint – do you know anyone who’d like to enter a fishing competition (entry is free thanks to Export) and win a $70,000 boat? Catch all the details in the next issue of NZ Fishing News or online at fishingcomp.co.nz
