Time out for Tarakihi

ARE WE REALLY SUSTAINABLE? New Zealand claims to have a world-leading quota management system yet it allows trawling and netting in known fish nursery areas. Fifty years of trawling, wastage and dumping has taken its toll on our fisheries. Over time, our tarakihi population on NZ’s east coast has dropped by 83%.

Like you, thousands of people want our fish stocks restored to healthy levels. The best available scientific advice is that substantial cuts to commercial catches are required to rebuild the tarakihi population within a reasonable time frame. We need to make this happen now.

For the first time in decades, we have the opportunity to rescue tarakihi from depletion and reduce our environmental footprint. The road to success starts with the Minister of Fisheries drastically cutting commercial tarakihi catches. A decision needs to be made by October.
