Snapper World Cup over two contests

With an increased focus on sustainable fishing, the Furuno Snapper World Cup will be up for grabs in 2019 at two events that are measure-based.

The prestigious trophy will be fished for at the Mercury Bay Gamefishing Club’s popular Stabicraft Trailerboat tournament (March 7-9), followed by the ITM Trade Club Fishing Competition at Whangaroa (March 21-23).

The Furuno Snapper World Cup was spawned at the legendary ‘Furuno tournament’ of years gone by. Previously the cup has been run over a series of tournaments nationwide and was awarded to the angler who catches the biggest snapper overall.

More recently it had been aligned with the Beach and Boat Tournament, but with that relationship coming to an end, the cup will have a new home and new format in 2019.

“Electronic Navigation Ltd (ENL) and Furuno are very happy to be involved in a number of tournaments around the country in conjunction with many of our dealers, and ultimately being able to award the Furuno Snapper World Cup trophy to one angler at the end of the season,” says ENL Group Managing Director Gareth Hodson.

“Furuno has had a long and successful association with recreational fishing tournaments for decades, and we’re more than happy to continue that relationship.”

ENL, who also manufacturer and export the WASSP Multibeam Sonar to more than 30 countries, believe the majority of commercial and recreational fishermen are extremely focused on sustainability and the protection of New Zealand’s valuable fishery resource and marine environment.

“We are constantly innovating new technology and sponsoring events that increase awareness and the ability to target the right species. We are in discussions with a number of event organisers that have a long-term view on our fishery, ensuring Kiwi fisho’s and future generations have fun on the water.”

“We will be looking to adopt a length measurement system for future fishing tournaments, utilising digital recording – meaning that more fish will be released back into the ocean.”
