Shellfish warning - Hawkes Bay
Hawkes Bay District Health Board has issued a warning for people not to eat shellfish gathered between Cape Kidnappers and the Mohaka river mouth, just south of Wairoa.
Health Protection Officer Noel Watson said tests showed that the levels of paralytic shellfish poisoning toxin in shellfish were well above the safe health limit.
He said mussels sampled from Pania Reef near Napier had a level of 10 micrograms of toxin above the recommended limit.
Mr Watson said shellfish enthusiasts should remember that cooking affected shellfish does not remove the toxin.
