A rahui (no take) was placed on Maunganui Bay from today for two years. Both Ngati Kuta and Patukeha hapu as kaitiaki of Rakaumangamanga and under customary lore have an obligation to ensure abundance of the fishery.
According to a Ngati Kuta and Patukeha hapu the area needs time to regenerate the resident fish populations and the rahui will remain in place for two years. During that time the local iwi will monitor the diversity and abundance of fish and marine life.
The Rahui area is approx 150 hectares. The boundary makers are an outside line between Motuwheteke and Putahataha islands and the whole of Maunganui Bay.
